Wigan, Wigan, United Kingdom Wrightington Wigan & Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Position Overview

***This role includes a £10k recruitment and retention package to be discussed with the successful candidate.***

We are pleased to present an opportunity to become a vital member of our dedicated and compassionate Haematology Team, delivering level 2A services to our community. This position is well-suited for professionals seeking to practice Haematology in a well-managed District General Hospital with strong connections to Primary Care and local community services.

This is a full-time role collaborating with two other full-time Haematology Consultants within a cohesive Haematology Team providing level 2A services in a District General Hospital setting.

Key Responsibilities

This position is a consultant role within the Department of Clinical Haematology.

The role is designed as full-time (10 PAs - 8 DCC, core SPA, Trust SPA). Responsibilities include leading three general Haematology clinics weekly, managing Haematology inpatient admissions, overseeing laboratory work, and participating in our weekly sector multi-disciplinary team meetings. There is also the potential for remote work due to the advanced IT infrastructure within the Trust.

The on-call commitment is 1 in 3 for local weekly coverage of referrals. Out-of-hours support is provided for clinical and laboratory inquiries outside regular working hours. Current commitments include 1 in 8 Monday to Friday for multiple hospitals, and 1 in 10 for weekends across several facilities.

About Us

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is proud to deliver acute hospital and community services to the local population. We prioritize our staff, believing that 'content staff lead to satisfied patients'. Our organization has a proven history of staff engagement and embodies our values 'the WWL Way'.

We are dedicated to placing patients at the center of our operations, ensuring safe and effective care that respects and upholds dignity. We seek to recruit individuals who align with our values and beliefs.

Job Duties

The team comprises two additional consultants, two staff grades, two Haematology Clinical Nurse Specialists, and an FY1. Outpatient chemotherapy is administered at our Cancer Care Centre, with a separate Planned Investigation Unit for outpatient treatments, including blood transfusions and iron infusions.

The laboratory at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary processes inpatient blood tests, featuring a microscopy room for blood film analysis. Lymph node and bone marrow biopsies are sent to a tertiary diagnostic center, which provides comprehensive diagnostic reports.

We are integrated into the Greater Manchester Cancer Network and receive support from The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and Manchester University Foundation Trust for patients requiring specialized care.

The Trust has recently attained Teaching Hospital status with Edge Hill University Medical School, offering excellent opportunities for teaching and supporting the educational development of students and junior doctors.

The post holder will engage in laboratory work, providing guidance on diagnostic samples, validating and interpreting results, and contributing to the establishment of policies and procedures for sample examination.

The post holder will also participate in the diagnosis and management of individual patients through collaboration with patients, clinicians, and other hospital and community staff. The majority of the work will occur through outpatient clinics and day case procedures.

The WWL Trust Anticoagulant Service is managed by the Consultant Haematologists (one of whom leads anticoagulation) and is delivered by a multidisciplinary team of nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and biomedical scientists. Three hospital clinics and five community clinics are conducted weekly, managing up to 4000 patients. While patients remain the responsibility of the referring clinicians, the anticoagulant staff are accountable to the lead Consultant Haematologist.
