An opportunity has emerged for a seasoned Senior Commercial Lead to join a prominent civil engineering firm operating in North and South Yorkshire.
This position is primarily office-based, with necessary travel to project sites and subcontractor locations, which may involve overnight stays.
Key Responsibilities:
- Overseeing the Commercial Team, which includes Estimators, Buyers, and Quantity Surveyors.
- Conducting risk assessments and providing guidance on contractual issues.
- Identifying, valuing, and negotiating additional works and project scope, including preparing and finalizing variations, quotations, and re-rates.
- Drafting and managing contractual and general correspondence.
- Issuing and addressing contractual notices, early warning notices, compensation events, and variations, including negotiations with clients and their representatives.
- Managing costs, ensuring adherence to budgetary constraints and tender allowances.
- Compiling and updating financial reports, including detailed monthly Cost Value Reports (CVRs), cash flow forecasts, weekly site expenditures, commercial risk registers, and material wastage reconciliations.
- Preparing, negotiating, and finalizing interim applications, valuations, and final accounts in collaboration with the Site Quantity Surveyor, including substantiating claims for compensation events, additional works, delays, and disruptions.
- Offering commercial advice and support to the project team regarding costs, contractual matters, commercial strategies, and risk management.
- Collaborating with project planners to develop and update contract schedules, including benchmarking and creating cause-and-effect programs.
- Sourcing subcontractors and consultants, including drafting Subcontract documents and Consultancy Orders.
- Mentoring and guiding site Quantity Surveyors and head office commercial administration teams.
- Managing general and commercial administration of Subcontractors and Consultants from the inquiry stage through to negotiation and settlement of final accounts.
- This includes receiving and responding to subcontractor applications, notices, claims, and variations, agreeing on interim and final measures, and reporting liabilities.
- Participating in progress meetings, design meetings, and subcontractor discussions.
- Maintaining precise site records, measurements, and diaries.
- Ensuring compliance with company systems and best practices.
- Collaborating with bid teams in the preparation of tenders.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
- At least ten years of post-qualification experience in turnkey projects as a contractor.
Ability to adapt to diverse business cultures.
A proven team leader.
Client-focused approach.
Capability to plan, manage, and coordinate subcontractors, designers, and consultants.
In-depth knowledge of NEC forms of Contract.
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word.
Demonstrated high level of numeracy and literacy.
