Position Overview:
The Superintendent will report directly to the Fleet Manager and will be tasked with ensuring that all vessels under their supervision are maintained in a safe and operationally sound condition, adhering to the directives issued by clients, senior management, flag state authorities, and classification societies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the efficient operation of managed vessels to meet required standards, minimizing downtime and safeguarding client assets.
  • Ensure that all ship operations, onboard activities, maintenance standards, and vessel aesthetics meet the expectations of both the client and the company.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between ship personnel and shore-based teams.
  • Conduct audits of the daily technical operations of the vessels under management.
  • Provide expert guidance to vessel staff and company management within relevant areas of expertise.
  • Monitor compliance with all statutory requirements related to certification, manning, safety protocols, and machinery, maintaining appropriate records and liaising with classification societies and flag administrations as necessary.
  • Review monthly survey reports to ensure accurate information is reported and manage any upcoming surveys or extensions with consideration of trading patterns and future voyages.
  • Address minutes from Safety Committee Meetings and ensure operational procedures are executed in a manner that promotes safe and efficient vessel operations.
  • Oversee planned maintenance systems and maintain familiarity with company policies and operational manuals to provide effective advice during any emergency response situations.
  • Review log books and periodic returns submitted by vessels to ensure compliance and accuracy.
  • Advise the Fleet Manager on daily operational issues and report any significant challenges to senior management.
  • Conduct periodic inspections and drills on vessels, reporting findings to the Fleet Manager, senior management, and clients as appropriate.
  • Perform audits of vessels as required by the management system.
  • Maintain necessary documentation and disseminate technical bulletins to ensure the safe and efficient operation of managed vessels.
  • Ensure vessels are manned with technically skilled personnel possessing relevant experience.
  • Coordinate and oversee the safe and economical provision of all services necessary for vessel operations, including port services, agents, bunkering, and external contractors.
  • Assist the Fleet Manager in preparing annual operating budgets and ensure accurate forecasting of costs associated with technical operations.
  • Prepare budgets and specifications for dry-docking and repair work, analyze quotations, and liaise with clients regarding dry-dock selection and scheduling.
  • Verify and authorize price quotations for spares and services for vessels not under direct management, discussing any expenditures beyond authorization limits with the Fleet Manager and senior management.
  • Monitor vessel expenditures to ensure accurate financial reporting at month-end, submitting reports to the Fleet Manager for review.
  • Assist in the preparation of insurance claim reports and submissions.
  • Conduct interviews with senior officers during office visits and participate in periodic appraisals.
  • Provide coverage for the Fleet Manager during their absence due to business travel or holidays.
  • Liaise with all departments that support the vessels under your responsibility.
  • Participate in the recruitment process for sea staff as requested by the Personnel Department.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Undertake additional tasks relevant to the position as needed.
Candidate Requirements:

Essential:
  • Qualifications to serve as a key member of the shipboard management team, fulfilling the role of at least second engineer or chief officer.
  • Experience at sea as part of the onboard management team.
  • Onshore experience within a shipping company, specifically in operations.
  • Knowledge of ISM, ISPS, and MLC regulations.
  • Strong understanding of vessel operations, technical aspects, and safety procedures, particularly in chemical, oil, and gas tanker operations.
  • Solid financial acumen regarding budgeting and cost control while upholding company safety and quality standards.
Desirable:
  • Unlimited Chief Engineer or Master Mariners Certificate of Competency in compliance with STCW II/2.
  • A degree in marine engineering or related nautical science subjects.
  • Sailing experience as a chief engineer or master.
This role offers the potential for hybrid working arrangements, subject to commercial demands.
