At Mencap, we are excited to introduce our Employ Me initiatives, designed to assist individuals with learning disabilities and/or Autism in acquiring the essential skills, knowledge, and experience necessary for successful entry into paid employment.

We are embarking on a new venture and are in search of committed and empathetic individuals from diverse backgrounds, particularly those with lived experiences related to the criminal justice system, to join our team as Relief Employment Specialists. Comprehensive training will be provided through the British Association for Supported Employment.

As an Employment Specialist, your role will involve offering personalized support to individuals with learning disabilities, learning difficulties, or autism, helping them develop the skills and knowledge required to secure new employment. This position will focus on supporting individuals with a history of offending or those at risk of offending. Your unique perspectives and personal experiences will be invaluable in providing guidance, mentorship, and advocacy for these individuals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with external employers to create job opportunities
  • Facilitate the development of employment pathways
  • Work collaboratively within the broader Employ Me team
  • Provide training and support to participants to help them acquire practical and competitive skills
  • Partner with managers and mentors to assist participants in overcoming challenges and progressing in their roles
  • Offer travel training to participants to ensure they can commute to and from their workplaces (where applicable)

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in supporting individuals with patience and encouragement
  • Strong record-keeping and reporting abilities
  • Flexibility to adapt to various working environments
  • Professional demeanor and reliable attendance
  • A genuine interest in learning disabilities and autism

This position operates on a relief bank basis, meaning work is offered as needed. While there may be opportunities for longer-term engagements, the majority of work will be short-term and ad hoc, tailored to fit your availability. Unlike zero-hour contracts, there is no obligation to accept work offered.
