Job Overview
As a vital member of the Acute Oncology Team (AOT), you will play a key role in providing the Acute Oncology Service (AOS) for patients diagnosed with cancer, adhering to national standards and the Quality Assurance Process.
Your collaboration with various healthcare professionals, including Oncologists, Haematologists, and Specialist Palliative Care Teams, is essential. You will also engage with all cancer Multidisciplinary Teams, the Emergency Department, and the Emergency Assessment Unit.
Additionally, you will connect with primary and tertiary care colleagues and the broader hospital nursing and medical teams to ensure comprehensive patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Your duties will include:
- Working autonomously and collaboratively to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate evidence-based nursing care programs, which may extend into community outreach as necessary.
- Acting as a key worker to identify patients who may benefit from investigations for cancers of unknown primary (CUP) or metastases of unknown origin (MUO), facilitating targeted investigations and prompt triage into oncology or specialist palliative care.
- Supporting the Acute Oncology Team in delivering the AOS for cancer patients, in accordance with national guidelines and quality assurance requirements.
- Partnering with essential staff within the AOS, including Oncologists, Haematologists, and Specialist Palliative Care Teams, as well as all cancer Multidisciplinary Teams, Emergency Department, and Emergency Assessment Unit.
- Contributing to the planning, delivery, and evaluation of specialized educational programs for staff at all levels across the Trust, primary care settings, and patients as appropriate.
- Assisting the Macmillan Acute Oncology Nurses in developing and assessing clinical audit programs and guidelines to ensure the AOS's effectiveness through appropriate research.

Qualifications and Experience
To be considered for this role, candidates must possess:
- Registered Nurse - 1st level with NMC.
- Relevant master’s degree in nursing or a commitment to pursue one.
- Experience in Acute Oncology nursing and substantial experience in Oncology, Haematology, Chemotherapy, or Palliative Care.
- Knowledge of managing acute presentations and maintaining clinical policies and guidelines.
- Evidence of continuous professional development and experience in clinical audit and research application.
Your ability to conduct clinical assessments, provide symptom management advice, and communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams will be essential for success in this role.
