In this role, you will provide essential support to the pharmacy service by offering digital assistance to the broader pharmacy team, facilitating all facets of clinical and technical hospital pharmacy services.

This position is open to qualified Pharmacy Technicians registered with the GPhC or non-pharmacy professionals possessing an equivalent IT qualification at degree level or higher. While prior experience in similar roles is preferred, exceptional candidates with less experience may be considered for our structured training and education pathway. Experience in hospital pharmacy is not mandatory, as comprehensive training and development will be provided.

This role primarily operates between various hospital sites, which are well-connected to surrounding areas.

Key Responsibilities

Role Purpose:

The individual in this position will be accountable for assisting in the daily operational management of various pharmacy IT systems.

The responsibilities include ensuring the seamless operation of all pharmacy IT functions, encompassing dispensary, inventory management, procurement, aseptic services, and ward-based teams.

The role requires the maintenance of diverse pharmacy IT hardware, including computers, printers, and various automated dispensing systems across the Trust.

The individual will support the implementation, application, training, and maintenance of any new pharmacy systems.

Additionally, the role involves preparing and distributing a range of routine and ad-hoc reports generated from the computer systems.

A comprehensive understanding of all departments and processes within Pharmacy is essential to maintain pharmacy systems and provide training to staff.

There may be occasions where the individual is expected to provide pharmacy IT support to external organizations as deemed appropriate.

The individual may also be required to act in the capacity of principal technician and/or lead pharmacist when necessary, representing pharmacy IT interests to external groups.

Key Working Relationships

All users of pharmacy IT systems, senior management staff, primary care trusts, external organizations, and IT project teams.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Providing daily IT support to the Pharmacy department.
  • Assisting in identifying and resolving user issues with specialized pharmacy IT software.
  • Maintaining specialized pharmacy software to ensure uninterrupted service.
  • Maintaining pharmacy hardware, including robotic dispensing and storage solutions.
  • Analyzing information to diagnose complex faults in pharmacy IT systems.
  • Commissioning work from the Trust ICT Department for unresolved issues.
  • Providing cross-site pharmacy IT support as needed.
  • Preparing and validating routine data reports for various stakeholders.
  • Responding to complex queries on an ad-hoc basis.
  • Ensuring accurate and compliant dissemination of sensitive data.
  • Supporting the operation and technical competency of pharmacy systems.
  • Delivering training to staff on the appropriate use of specialized software.
  • Mentoring junior colleagues.
  • Contributing to the planning of IT requirements for future pharmacy services.
  • Maintaining awareness of current IT developments in pharmacy services.
  • Assisting in the installation of approved software upgrades.
  • Participating in periodic stocktakes to validate stock management functions.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Further qualification or experience at degree level or equivalent.
  • Broad experience in delivering pharmaceutical care in a hospital setting.
  • Proficient IT user with experience in multidisciplinary working.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with internal and external customers.
  • Experience in using IT databases and Excel.
  • Problem-solving skills and staff training experience.

Desirable:

  • Experience in writing and validating reports.
