Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team at Diamond Light Source. This role presents a remarkable opportunity to contribute to the development of a cutting-edge cryo-sample transfer and storage automation system.
The primary focus of this position is to spearhead the engineering advancements necessary for the creation of sample holder formats, cassettes, and shipping containers tailored for automation enhancements. Key responsibilities include:
- Developing innovative and adaptable engineering solutions.
- Creating detailed engineering designs using CAD software.
- Conducting Static Structural Analysis through analytical methods and FEA tools.
- Performing Thermal and Cryogenic Analysis using both analytical techniques and FEA tools.
- Executing Mechanical, Thermal, and Motion system testing and validation of prototypes.
- Managing comprehensive project documentation and files.
- Leading Risk Assessments and implementing strategies to mitigate identified risks.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess a degree in Engineering or equivalent professional experience in the field of Mechanical Engineering.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Experience in designing systems that function under extreme conditions, such as Ultra High Vacuum and cryogenic environments.
- Proficiency in engineering drawings and 3D modeling, along with familiarity with modern manufacturing techniques, including additive manufacturing.
- Knowledge of risk assessment processes and compliance with directives such as the Machinery Directive.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively within multi-disciplinary teams.
- Strong communication skills, enabling effective discussion of ideas, presentation of solutions, and collaboration throughout project phases.
- Hands-on experience in research and development activities.
Candidates lacking direct experience in all areas will still be considered if they can demonstrate a solid understanding of the fundamental physical principles during the interview, coupled with a willingness to learn.
