Transportation Planning Expert

We are a global employee-owned business consultancy specializing in transport, cities, and infrastructure. Our mission is to help people, places, and economies thrive.
We have an enduring commitment to generating success for our clients, for ourselves, and for the communities we support. Our commitment ultimately improves the way people live, work, and travel.
At Steer, our consultants work to improve the outlook of our region, ensuring that our clients keep social and environmental impact in mind as they conduct their operations. We believe that actions speak louder than words, and therefore, we have annual measurable targets across all social impact areas, particularly Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and sustainability. We have also committed to successfully operating as a Net Zero Carbon company by 2025, participating in the UN's Global Compact.
About the RoleWe are seeking an experienced individual with a streets design and case-making background for our UK-based team. This opportunity offers the right candidate the chance to grow their career and have a positive impact on how our urban streets are defined and prioritized for the future.
- Setting the Vision for Deansgate in Manchester - a key element of the City Centre Access Strategy
- Working as part of an architectural team to develop external urban realm proposals as part of the Restoration & Renewal of the Houses of Parliament
- Developing Quality Bus Transit feasibility designs in Salford, Rochdale, and Bury and producing the supporting business case
As a Streets Design Principal Consultant/Associate, you will:
- Manage transport planning studies, drawing on your project management skills, technical knowledge, and analytical ability to effectively manage multi-disciplinary teams that comprise both internal colleagues and external subconsultants
- Provide clients with the best advice by integrating work developed by team members (including technical inputs as traffic modeling outputs or design drawings) into high-quality project deliverables that contribute to the company's reputation for delivering excellence
- Manage project budgets, exercising effective financial and budgetary control
- Manage the preparation of competitive proposals for transport planning studies
- Have a broad background that balances technical knowledge (which may be through hands-on experience in engineering and/or modeling) with a strong grasp of the societal, economic, and political contexts that transport exists within (including regional policies such as Healthy Streets in London and Streets-for-All in Manchester)
- Effectively deploy an appropriate mix of analytical tools and techniques for each project, drawing on your understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, and available transport data sources
- Take responsibility for multiple projects simultaneously, successfully managing competing deadlines
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- Support our highway design advice offer across the company both in the UK and internationally
- Lead work streams within projects, ensuring that best practice techniques are applied consistently
- Deliver high-quality highway and transportation advice as part of multi-disciplinary teams across a range of transport-related projects, including major developments, highway-related regeneration projects, and sustainable transport initiatives
- Take responsibility for key projects deliverables through project initiation, feasibility, and preliminary and detailed designs
- Prepare and present reports, proposals, briefing notes, and design reports
- Manage project budgets, exercising effective financial and budgetary control
- Hold professional and academic qualifications in transport planning, engineering, or planning
- Have a solid ability to use Microsoft Office (in particular Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
- Understand the capabilities of specialist software such as traffic modeling packages (including LinSig, VISSIM, and SATURN), CAD, GIS, and data visualization packages (such as Tableau)
We believe that a healthy work-life balance is paramount to long-term success. We aim to keep our employees' typical work week to 37 hours, and we encourage employees to spend 60% of their time either in the office or on-site with clients.
CompensationWe are committed to ensuring that all our employees are compensated fairly and at a competitive rate. All initial compensation, regardless of location, may be subject to change as skills, abilities, and internal equity are taken into account. In addition to base salary, all employees will be eligible for an annual discretionary performance bonus.
BenefitsWe offer a competitive package of benefits, including private medical insurance and health screening, life assurance, group income protection, company pension scheme, Employee Assistance Program (EAP), Season Ticket Loan, a group Share Incentive Plan, up to 5 days for volunteering activities, and a discretionary bonus scheme based on annual compensation (dependent upon individual and company performance). Additionally, we offer 25 days annual leave, plus the 8 bank holidays, and the ability to buy and sell leave in the year to give extra flexibility.
We are an equal opportunity employer and welcome all candidates regardless of race, color, ancestry, gender identity or expression, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, Veteran status, or any other legally protected status. If you require an accommodation, now or throughout your employment, please let us know. Part-time and flexible working applications will be considered.
