Job Title: Head of Archive

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to lead our archive management team at the Guardian Foundation. As Head of Archive, you will be responsible for overseeing the professional management and care of our archive collections, ensuring they are preserved and made accessible to our colleagues and other users.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage the acquisition, appraisal, cataloguing, preservation, access, and outreach of our archive collections
  • Provide expert advice and guidance on archive management and preservation to colleagues and external stakeholders
  • Line manage the Archivist and supervise volunteers and work experience students
  • Manage the Calm database and digital repository, ensuring accurate and up-to-date records of our archive collections
  • Maintain the archive's websites and online catalogue, ensuring they are user-friendly and accessible
  • Organise loans for exhibitions and ensure the archive budget is managed effectively
  • Give talks and tours relating to the archive and the history of the newspapers
  • Ensure correct environmental conditions and security in the archive stores
  • Programme evaluation and impact reporting, including the preparation of statistics and reports for the Guardian Foundation
  • Programme planning for the archive, working closely with the Director of Programmes and Executive Director
Requirements:
  • Proven experience as an Archivist, ideally within a business archive environment
  • Archives and Records Association (ARA) recognised qualification or equivalent
  • Experience of cataloguing complex archive collections and working with digital records
  • Knowledge and experience of loaning processes
  • Good knowledge of modern history and current affairs
  • Knowledge of the Data Protection Act and copyright issues
  • Strong IT skills and good communication skills
  • Experience of managing staff or volunteers
