About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Control Systems and Applications Engineer to join our team at GE Grid Solutions. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for designing and developing control and protection systems for High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) schemes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support Business Operations: Provide technical expertise to support business operations, including tendering, operations, contractual, and after-sales needs related to HVDC system modeling in PSCAD.
  • Develop and Maintain AC Network Models: Develop and maintain AC network models in various simulation tools, including PSCAD, and validate their accuracy.
  • Conduct Dynamic Performance and Protection Studies: Conduct dynamic performance and protection coordination studies using both offline and online simulation tools.
  • Convert PSS/E AC Networks to PSCAD Models: Convert PSS/E AC networks to PSCAD models and convert MATLAB Simulink algorithms to PSCAD models.
  • Perform Engineering Design Reviews: Perform engineering design reviews to identify potential project risks and technical weaknesses and propose safe, reliable, and compliant solutions.
  • Understand Project Milestones and Financial Impact: Understand the key milestones in a project plan, their financial impact, and ensure that technical risks are understood and mitigated in accordance with the plan.
  • Propose Improvements to Existing Algorithms: Propose improvements to existing algorithms and strategies for power fault recovery or instability issues during DPS studies.
  • Develop New Strategies for Control and Protection: Develop new strategies for control, protection, and sequencing (start-up/shut-down sequence) to meet customer technical specifications if required.
  • Support Continual Improvement: Support continual improvement, raising the effectiveness and efficiency of the team through the introduction of tools, methods, and process improvements and coordinating with the Continuous Improvement leaders.
Requirements
  • Engineering Degree or Equivalent: Hold an engineering degree or equivalent, including power systems and power electronics subjects or proven equivalent knowledge and experience in HVDC business.
  • Excellent Communication Skills: Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to Understand Customer Requirements: Ability to understand and communicate customer requirements.
  • Familiarity with Power Systems and Interactions: Familiar with functional characteristics of power systems and interactions between AC and HVDC systems.
  • Knowledge of HVDC Control and Protection: Knowledge of HVDC control, protection, and sequencing strategy.
  • Familiarity with PSCAD Simulation Tools: Familiar with PSCAD simulation tools.
  • Ability to Work to Deadlines: Ability to work to deadlines while maintaining the safety, quality, and engineering integrity of the solution.
  • Flexibility and Willingness to Travel: Must be flexible with working hours and willing to travel in order to support projects globally.
Desirable Characteristics
  • Ability to Define Requirements: Ability to define requirements and ensure they adhere to best practice.
  • Experience in HVDC Industry: Experience working in the HVDC industry.
  • Familiarity with Power System Study Tools: Familiar with power system study tools such as Power Factory, PSS/E, ETAP, EMTDC RV, etc.
  • Experience in Leading Technical Discussions: Experienced in leading technical discussions with customers and developing client relationships.
