The Role
Polaris Community is a respected local provider of residential care and educational services for young individuals aged 7-18. Our mission is to enhance the resilience, self-esteem, and capabilities of all the children we serve.
Our institution is recognized as an Accredited SILVER Award Attachment and Trauma Sensitive School, having achieved an Outstanding Ofsted inspection.
As an Educational Support Specialist, your primary responsibility will be to enrich the educational experience of students with diverse special educational and learning requirements. You will also collaborate with teaching staff to empower students to achieve independence and engage fully in the curriculum and school life. This position will be based at Hurdley Bank School.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide support to students individually, in small groups, or within classroom settings, during lunch, breaks, and unstructured times.
- Accompany students on organized educational outings as necessary.
- Assist in the development of social skills and appropriate behavior in collaboration with the SENDCo.
- Contribute to the creation, implementation, and assessment of individualized programs.
- Support students exhibiting challenging behaviors.
- Help address issues that may cause anxiety or emotional distress in students.
- Maintain accurate records as required by the institution.
- Engage in collaborative planning with teaching staff to optimize support effectiveness.
- Assist in delivering the Key Stage 2 and 3 curriculum.
- Support the implementation of KS4 study programs.
- Participate in relevant working groups as needed.
- Work as part of a flexible and supportive team to promote the school’s ethos.
- Attend weekly staff meetings and relevant professional development events.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Experience in a similar educational environment or relevant qualifications.
- Academic qualifications to at least GCSE standard and professional qualifications to at least NVQ level 2, or proven competency through experience.
- Basic first aid knowledge.
- Ability to work independently and with a high level of accuracy.
- Strong time management skills and flexibility to meet job demands.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively within a team.
- Strong oral and written communication skills across various contexts (students, parents, colleagues, etc.).
- Willingness to undertake relevant training for personal development and to benefit the institution.
- Understanding of child development and various learning methodologies is advantageous.
- Knowledge of ACES or the impact of childhood trauma on later life is beneficial; training will be provided to the successful candidate.
- Access to a vehicle and a full driving license are required.
- Willingness to undergo an enhanced DBS check if selected for the position.
Benefits:
- Term time only role.
- Working hours: 8.30 to 16:00 Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday; 8.30 to 17:00 on Tuesday.
- 39 weeks of work with students plus 5.6 weeks of holiday.
