Position Overview
The Senior Midwifery Consultant plays a pivotal role in delivering exceptional clinical care and providing leadership within maternity services. Collaborating closely with the Maternity Triumvirate, Heads of Midwifery, and the broader senior management team, this position is dedicated to enhancing clinical excellence, education, training, and service development within the maternity sector. The Senior Midwifery Consultant will specifically focus on advancing and assessing cross-site intrapartum services, ensuring comprehensive support for women throughout their antenatal journey.
Key Responsibilities
The incumbent will exemplify expert midwifery practice, serving as a role model for peers by demonstrating the highest standards of midwifery skills while maintaining a significant degree of professional autonomy. A commitment of 50% of their time will be dedicated to practical midwifery, emphasizing role modeling and clinical excellence in the intrapartum environment.
Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams is essential to effectively plan, deliver, and assess care for women. The Senior Midwifery Consultant will also play a crucial role in education and professional development, identifying learning needs across the organization and working alongside the Associate Director of Midwifery and other key stakeholders.
Professional Leadership
As the expert midwifery lead for intrapartum care, the Senior Midwifery Consultant will provide visionary leadership, inspiring midwives to enhance care standards and develop professional practices. This role involves working in partnership with senior management to implement a maternity strategy that promotes midwifery care and continuity of care principles.
Education and Development
The position includes a significant focus on education, where the Senior Midwifery Consultant will collaborate with educational teams to design and implement training programs that address the evolving midwifery landscape. They will also contribute to the recruitment and retention of skilled staff, fostering a supportive learning environment.
Research and Evaluation
In partnership with senior leadership, the Senior Midwifery Consultant will lead initiatives aimed at developing and evaluating policies and strategies that enhance midwifery care. This includes promoting midwifery-based research and audits, ensuring that care practices align with national and local policy objectives.
Qualifications and Skills
To be successful in this role, candidates must possess a registered midwifery qualification, ideally at a master's level, with a willingness to pursue further academic qualifications.
