About the Role

This is a high-profile tax policy role within HM Treasury, requiring a strong understanding of VAT, excise duties, and international trade agreements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and implementation of tax policy for Northern Ireland and the EU, ensuring alignment with HM Treasury's objectives.
  • Collaborate with ministers, senior officials, and external stakeholders to shape and drive HM Treasury's tax agenda.
  • Provide strategic advice on VAT, insurance premium tax, alcohol duties, tobacco duties, gambling taxes, and the Soft Drinks Industry Levy.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with EU partners, ensuring effective implementation of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement.
  • Oversee work on emerging devolution matters, including Scottish VAT assignment and Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories.
Requirements
  • Excellent relationship-building skills, with the ability to pitch and plan sensitive conversations.
  • Strong presentation and negotiation skills, with experience in managing tricky dynamics and presenting to external audiences.
  • Strategic thinking, with the ability to proactively map and define work, and good reactive problem-solving in complex and technical areas.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain issues clearly, concisely, and persuasively to a range of audiences.
