Special Educational Needs Support Assistant
3 months ago
Are you experienced in the fields of education, care, or support services? Do you have a background in assisting individuals with significant learning challenges or elderly patients with ongoing health issues?
Do you possess skills in personal care, medication administration, and mobility assistance? Have you achieved a Level 2 qualification in education or health and social care? Are you capable of providing support to wheelchair users when necessary?
If you answered affirmatively to these questions, this position could be a great fit for you.
The role is situated within a specialized educational institution and presents both challenges and rewards. You will have the chance to work closely with students facing severe learning difficulties, making a meaningful impact on their educational journey.
While the challenges may be significant, the smaller class sizes compared to mainstream education allow for a more personalized approach, enabling you to truly enhance the educational experience for these students.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide individualized and small group support to students with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).
- Encourage independence and assist with care as required.
- Support students with their physical and personal care needs.
- Foster positive behavior and maintain a safe, inclusive learning environment.
- Establish constructive relationships with students, parents, caregivers, and fellow staff members.
- Assist in lesson preparation and delivery, including therapeutic activities, under the direction of the class teacher.
- Participate in various sensory activities, including soft play, rebound therapy, and hydrotherapy.
- Engage actively with students with severe learning difficulties to ensure they receive the best educational experience.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A valid driving license and access to a vehicle (preferred but not essential).
- A solid understanding of profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) or severe learning difficulties.
- Knowledge of diverse teaching strategies and interventions for students with complex learning needs.
- A willingness to learn and adapt to the unique needs of each student.
- A warm, compassionate demeanor with a commitment to providing the best possible experience for students.
- The ability to remain composed in high-pressure situations.
- Capability to work collaboratively within a team.
Desirable qualifications or knowledge may include:
- Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS).
- Makaton or British Sign Language (BSL) at any level.
- Training in Autism Awareness/ASC.
- Team Teach / MAPA training.
- Buccal midazolam training.
- Hydrotherapy and physiotherapy training.
- Rebound therapy.
- Knowledge of PEG and tube feeding.
Due to the nature of this position, an enhanced DBS check will be conducted prior to employment.
This rewarding role is not commonly available, and many individuals enter this field driven by their passion for supporting students with additional learning needs. If you believe you are the right fit and wish to make a positive difference in the lives of these students, we encourage you to explore this opportunity further.
