Job Title: Assistant Ecologist

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Assistant Ecologist to join our team. As an Assistant Ecologist, you will play a key role in supporting our biodiversity team in leading Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and sustainable development on key consultancy projects across all sectors.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in carrying out extended Phase 1 habitat/UKHab surveys on sites, and BREEAM reports for key clients.
  • Prepare management plans and documents required to secure projects.
  • Support the Mace biodiversity team with the commissioning of ecology surveys, including preparing technical scopes for sub-consultants and developing strong working relationships with them.
  • Engage in liaison with various stakeholders, including developers, local authorities, landowners, and environmental NGOs.
  • Contribute to Defra Biodiversity Net Gain assessments, including the use of biodiversity metrics, design, and delivery of net gain solutions.
  • GIS Mapping
  • Write and carry out initial assurance reviews of ecology reports, such as Phase 2 ecological surveys, habitat/landscape management plans, construction environmental management plans, etc.
  • Work with construction project teams to deliver best practice in terms of protecting and enhancing ecology and support them with specific ecology queries.
  • Support the development of client climate change, sustainability, and/or social value strategies on individual projects.
  • Become a technical expert and promote innovation in a particular area of sustainability.
  • Provide proactive generalist support to all relevant stakeholders.
  • Support the drive for Mace to be a leader in climate change and sustainability.
  • Provide knowledge of sustainable building design, including embodied and operational carbon and energy reduction, in new build and refurbishment projects.
  • Support design teams to understand and respond to environmental constraints and opportunities to maximize positive environmental benefits.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with client and stakeholders, including design team members, contractors, sub-contractors, and regulators.
  • Work collaboratively towards the common goal of net zero carbon transition and share responsibility for the proactive identification and management of the associated carbon emissions and reductions during the delivery of work.
Requirements:
  • Possess a suitable academic credential in an ecological field and hold (or work towards) membership with the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management at a qualifying level.
  • Full UK driving license
  • Any stakeholder engagement with the regulator, local authorities, and wildlife groups.
  • Experience in the following would also be beneficial: authoring ecological reports, developing proposals with nature-based solutions.
  • UK-wide experience (also covering Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland)
  • Knowledge of relevant UK wildlife legislation and ecological survey methodologies.
