About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Mission Design Engineer to join our team at Spire Global, Inc. As a key member of our mission design and analysis group, you will play a critical role in evaluating various aspects of space missions, including constellation formations, propulsion budgets, access/revisit models, data budgets, data latency models, power budgets, and vehicle & ground system architectures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and Trade Offs: Design and trade off various vehicle and constellation architectures to inform solution spaces for mission concepts and requirements.
  • Analysis and Modeling: Perform power analysis, coverage and revisit time analysis, propulsion sizing, latency analysis, data budgets and other mission design studies.
  • Tool Development: Leverage existing in-house tools and industry-standard constellation simulation tools (e.g. STK) and extend the capabilities of in-house constellation, spacecraft, and subsystem simulation tools.
  • Collaboration and Coordination: Coordinate with spacecraft and constellation software teams to build accurate models of subsystems and processes, and work closely with sales engineering and other internal engineering teams to evaluate and inform solution proposals for new business initiatives or new mission concepts.
Requirements
  • Education: Degree in a STEM field.
  • Programming Experience: Strong programming experience (Python preferred).
  • Modeling Experience: Experience using models in the real world, using real telemetry or sensor data, and experience modeling physical systems and processes.
  • Data Analytics: Basic data analytics and data processing to parse and visualize model outputs.
  • Spacecraft Dynamics: Good working knowledge of spacecraft orbital and rigid-body dynamics.
Preferred Qualifications
  • LEO Constellation Modeling: Demonstrated experience with LEO constellation modeling.
  • Satellite Communications: Demonstrated experience with satellite communications systems.
  • Communications Systems Engineering: Basic working knowledge of communications systems engineering (e.g. link budgets).
  • Aerospace Modeling Tools: Experience using aerospace modeling tools (e.g. STK, Matlab/Simulink).
  • Machine Learning and Data Science: Basic machine learning and data science skills.
  • Linux and Git: Well-versed in Linux and git.
