Wakefield, Wakefield, United Kingdom South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Trust Full time

Position Overview

Employment Type: Full Time - Weekly Hours

This role presents an excellent opportunity for a dedicated and proactive nurse with a strong background in Tuberculosis (TB) nursing.

The TB Nursing Specialist will assist the team leader in the management of community TB services, collaborating with the Health Integration Team to deliver a comprehensive TB service focused on disease management, care, and prevention.

The team employs a collaborative approach, maintaining strong connections with hospitals, community organizations, and public health authorities.

Key responsibilities include assessing both adults and children for TB, conducting screenings using Mantoux or IGRA tests, promoting HIV and other blood-borne virus testing, performing holistic assessments in line with national and local protocols, managing caseloads, identifying close contacts of confirmed cases, and facilitating necessary screenings.

Home visits will be required for adults, children, and families undergoing treatment for active TB, including those with multi-drug resistant (MDR) or extensively drug-resistant (XDR) TB, HIV, and other coexisting health conditions. The role also involves teaching, conducting service audits, and maintaining proficiency in IT systems. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, particularly for conveying sensitive information to patients and their families, especially when communication barriers exist.

Travel across the designated area for home visits and clinic sessions is a requirement.

Core Responsibilities

The TB team is responsible for providing expert guidance, leadership, and clinical services related to TB.

The primary objectives of the service include:

  • Identifying and mitigating the risk of new TB infections.
  • Delivering high-quality treatment and care for individuals affected by TB.

The team will achieve these objectives by raising awareness about TB among various groups, enhancing active case finding in high-risk populations, including contact tracing, and ensuring prompt access to TB services for those suspected of having the disease.

Services are tailored to meet the diverse needs of various groups and are delivered in multiple settings, including community locations, clinics, patients' homes, and acute care facilities. This role is adaptable, providing care to individuals, families, and communities in response to evolving local needs.

The position is based within a collaborative framework with hospitals, community organizations, and health protection agencies. The successful candidate will serve as a role model for nursing professionals by demonstrating expert clinical practice in TB care.
