Position Overview

The Senior Patient Care Assistant (PCA) is an integral member of the healthcare team, dedicated to delivering exceptional care to patients. This role operates under the guidance and oversight of a Registered Healthcare Professional.

The Senior PCA is responsible for executing a variety of patient care responsibilities, ensuring that the healthcare team can provide a high-quality and efficient service within hospital environments.

Key Responsibilities

To fulfill this role, the Senior PCA will:

  • Skillfully perform essential care tasks for patients.
  • Guarantee that clinical care is delivered effectively and that high standards are upheld.
  • Adhere to organizational policies to maintain a safe and patient-centered care environment.
  • Engage in personal and professional development activities to uphold care standards.

Main Duties

Experience in assisting with minor surgical procedures, particularly in dermatology.

Knowledge in urology practices, including flow rate assessments, bladder scanning, and urinalysis.

Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including venepuncture.

Experience in working within Ear, Nose, and Throat outpatient departments.

Support in chaperoning medical professionals during patient consultations.

Job Responsibilities

Role Summary:

The Senior PCA plays a vital role in the multidisciplinary team, providing compassionate care to patients. Under the supervision of a Registered Professional, the Senior PCA carries out a range of patient care tasks to ensure the delivery of high-quality service.

Patient Care and Clinical Duties:

Demonstrates empathy and compassion towards patients, families, and caregivers to ensure that person-centered care is consistently delivered.

Completes assigned patient care tasks as directed by a Registered Professional to maintain high standards of care.

Reports any changes in patients' physical or psychological conditions to the supervising Registered Professional.

Conducts various tests and communicates results to the Registered Professional, including urinalysis, blood pressure monitoring, and patient observations.

Performs patient care tasks such as wound observation, dressing changes, and removal of peripheral cannulas, reporting any concerns to the Registered Professional.

Addresses inquiries from patients, families, and caregivers regarding patient conditions and refers them to a Registered Professional when necessary.

Assists in the safe transfer of patients.

Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to ensure high standards of patient care are maintained.

Provides support to patients with daily living activities, including feeding, bathing, and repositioning, under the supervision of a trained professional.

Maintains effective communication and relationships with team members and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient care.

Policies and Standards:

Upholds patient confidentiality and adheres to information governance policies.

Participates in maintaining accurate records and fluid intake charts to ensure effective communication.

Follows organizational policies to ensure safe working practices for patients and colleagues.

Adheres to departmental procedures for the use of supplies and equipment to promote resource efficiency.

Equipment and Resources:

Follows departmental protocols for the use of supplies and equipment to ensure effective resource management.

Shares responsibility for housekeeping and stock control, demonstrating awareness of cost efficiency and safety.

Conducts routine checks on patient trolleys and bed spaces, ensuring all equipment is clean and in good working order, reporting any issues to the Registered Professional.

Qualifications and Training

Essential:

  • Vocational qualification at level III or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Completion of the Care Certificate.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with a minimum of Level 1 in Maths and English.

  • Completion of mandatory training requirements.
