Overview:

At Cogito, our Research and Development (R&D) division is pivotal in all aspects of design, material, and process innovation, driving the development of new product and process solutions tailored to our clients' needs. The enhancement of current or future offerings is achieved through our internal expertise and collaboration with external suppliers, academic institutions, commercial partners, and consultants.

This role encompasses the oversight and coordination of various project activities, serving as a vital technical resource across multiple domains. The Principal Scientist will work closely with other members of the broader R&D team, ensuring the application of robust technical strategies to advance assigned product development and research initiatives. This position will lead a multidisciplinary team that includes functions from R&D, Manufacturing, and Marketing, while also engaging effectively with external organizations and stakeholders. Some practical experimental work may also be part of the responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate effectively within a team setting, supervising junior staff and interfacing with cross-functional teams. Responsibilities include recruitment, staff development, performance evaluation, and other HR-related activities.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple projects concurrently.
  • Serve as an industry authority, independently designing, developing, and executing effective research and experimental methodologies. Guide junior scientists in conducting experiments and fulfilling project requirements, including milestones and timelines.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with internal teams and external partners.
  • Ensure the team employs appropriate statistical methods for data analysis, producing high-quality technical reports and presentations. Guarantee accurate data interpretation to facilitate informed decision-making.
  • Collaborate with project managers and technical teams to keep cross-functional teams updated on project status and challenges. Develop contingency plans for potential issues, working with others to mitigate risks associated with assigned objectives.
  • Contribute to the creation of patents, scientific publications, and product launches.
  • Engage in continuous improvement initiatives related to materials, analytical methods, and internal project management processes, proactively enhancing departmental operations.
  • Adhere to Health and Safety regulations, ensuring compliance at all times.
  • May oversee the collection, handling, labeling, and management of hazardous and universal waste in designated areas according to regulatory standards and site protocols.
  • Participate in activities aimed at attracting and retaining top talent, including staff development and performance management.
  • Mentor and supervise junior team members, actively participating in their career development.
  • Utilize extensive experience to identify challenges and guide the team in developing innovative solutions related to materials and processing.
  • Demonstrate creativity in developing new technologies to address business needs.
  • Manage and oversee technology projects in collaboration with external partners.
  • Minimal travel is anticipated.

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to comprehend and interpret complex technical documents.
  • Proficient in advanced technical report writing.
  • Expertise in materials science, particularly polymeric materials.
  • Skilled in data analysis and presentation.
  • Familiarity with advanced statistical methodologies.
  • Strong teamwork and leadership capabilities, with experience in guiding teams or projects.
  • Highly organized with a proven track record of effective workload management and planning.
  • Self-motivated, capable of independently managing multiple, often competing, priorities.
  • Exceptional communication skills.
  • Ability to meet stringent deadlines and perform under pressure.
  • Adaptability to accept various work assignments based on business needs.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Work Environment:

  • Work will be conducted in office settings, clean rooms, manufacturing areas, and laboratories. The individual may also be required to work at various sites as needed.
  • Flexibility in working hours is necessary to meet project deadlines, which may include early or late hours.
  • Exposure to hazardous materials or environments is expected, and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be utilized as outlined in standard operating procedures.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 3-8 years of relevant experience, depending on educational qualifications.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biological Sciences, or a related field with at least 8 years of experience.
  • Master's degree in Chemistry, Biological Sciences, or a related field with at least 6 years of experience.
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biological Sciences, or a related field with at least 3 years of experience.
