Job Purpose:
To provide strategic direction and leadership for all commercial personnel involved in designated projects, overseeing all corporate and project commercial responsibilities throughout both pre-contract and post-contract phases.
Mentoring and coaching direct reports in commercial processes, procedures, personnel development, and training is a key aspect of this role.
Assist the Commercial Manager in delivering commercial reports to the corporate function, ensuring adherence to all commercial procedures, and supporting the implementation of essential policies and procedures, including the Financial Management Framework and Tender Governance Procedures.
Key Responsibilities
The primary deliverables and responsibilities of the Commercial Lead include:
- Encouraging safe working practices within the commercial function.
- Conducting pre-award activities, including supporting the proposals team with commercial reviews of tender documents, evaluating commercial proposals before internal approval, preparing commercial qualifications and pricing notes, and coordinating commercial and legal qualifications.
- Overseeing post-award administration, ensuring the contract is accurately set up in the appropriate business system, that invoices are generated promptly and accurately, and that commercial models and scope of delivery are well understood by the contract management team.
- Ensuring that management of change is documented in contract variations/amendments and that commercial administration files are properly established and maintained.
- Negotiating and managing client incentive schemes.
- Accountable for key commercial deliverables, including margin improvement plans and cash flow enhancement strategies.
- Acting as the focal point for managing risk registers.
- Ensuring project compliance with financial Delegation of Authority.
- Regularly interfacing with clients.
- Leading and providing commercial support to the project team to ensure compliance with contract terms.
- Preparing monthly commercial management reports and contributing to monthly Contract Performance Reviews.
- Supporting governance and implementation of the Financial Management Framework within assigned projects.
- Liaising with various internal stakeholders regarding commercial management, risk assessments, corporate reporting, and contractual discussions.
- Assisting in the negotiation of Terms and Conditions with clients and suppliers.
- Collaborating with various internal stakeholders (Contract/Project Managers, Engineers) in all areas of commercial management, problem-solving, and dispute resolution with clients.
- Mentoring and developing junior commercial personnel.
- Enhancing project delivery while mitigating any risk or commercial exposure to Wood.
- Contributing directly to value creation and commercial success for Wood and its clients.
The ideal Commercial Lead will possess strong communication and leadership skills, with a commitment to managing and delivering Wood's core values and commercial processes ethically. Significant knowledge and experience in commercial administration processes and procedures are essential.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
- Relevant experience in a similar role or a professional qualification is preferred.
- Experience in contractual claims and dispute resolution is advantageous.
- Familiarity with interpreting contractual documentation.
- Experience in tendering and negotiation.
- Supervisory skills are essential.
- Demonstrated commitment to Wood and client Core Values.

- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team and manage others effectively.
- Capability to prioritize key tasks and resolve problems for the team.
