Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Veterinary Clinician in Infectious Disease to join our team at the University of Glasgow. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering a wide range of clinical and scholarly activities, including contributing to the delivery of an infectious diseases diagnostic service with a focus on companion animals and teaching undergraduates and postgraduates.

Main Responsibilities
  • Clinical: Contribute to the delivery of the Infectious Diseases service within Veterinary Diagnostic Services by providing a high-quality service as detailed in client service agreements. Offer appropriate advice to veterinary surgeons, veterinary nurses, and veterinary students in the University of Glasgow and to external referring practices and research clients.
  • Assist in the development of an administrative framework to facilitate systematic, consistent reporting of infectious disease results to internal and external clients.
  • Develop the international reputation of the companion animal infectious diseases component of the veterinary diagnostic service.
  • Support the training of clinical scholars (residents in infectious disease/veterinary public health), with a view to their successful completion of appropriate examinations.
  • Undertake continued personal development, in compliance with requirements of the RCVS.
Teaching:
  • Take responsibility for the organisation and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities, as directed by the Head of Division in consultation with the course and module leaders.
  • Contribute to the on-going development and design of the curriculum, in a manner that supports a research-led approach to student learning.
  • Support the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University's Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained or improved.
  • Lead and engage in the delivery of a range of assessment activities and engage fully in the examination process as appropriate, using a variety of methods and techniques, and provide effective, timely, and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.
  • Actively contribute to the training programme for the Clinical Scholar (Resident in Infectious Diseases/Veterinary Public Health).
  • Deliver teaching, including CPD courses (nationally and internationally).
  • Take responsibility for course reviews as appropriate and participating in the summative and formative assessment of students within the undergraduate curriculum.
  • Participate in undergraduate student mentoring.
Clinical Research:
  • Collaborate in clinical/diagnostic investigations and evidence-based medicine of an external reputation, publishing in high-quality refereed clinical/veterinary pathology journals and/or textbooks.
  • Attend and participate in national/international events/research seminars/conferences relevant to the service area.
  • Contribute to external funding applications required to underpin the long-term growth of the field of infectious diseases, ideally from a 'One Health' perspective.
  • Contribute to UG (summer projects) and PG student/resident supervision.
Administration:
  • Undertake Divisional and School-level administration as requested by the Head of Division/Head of School.
  • Contribute to the Performance & Development Review process as appropriate and in accordance with University strategy.
Engagement:
  • Participate in promotional activities and events related to Veterinary Diagnostic Services and Division of Pathology, Public Health & Disease Investigation.
  • Develop new ideas and participate in the delivery of continuing professional development (CPD) for practitioners or researchers in the UK and overseas.
Requirements
  • A1 Veterinary degree registerable with the RCVS.
  • For Appointment at Grade 8: A2 PhD in a relevant subject and professional certification in clinical pathology (e.g. FRCPath), infectious disease (e.g. DACVM) or small animal internal medicine (e.g. ECVIM).
  • Desirable: B1 Postgraduate research qualification in a related area or evidence of research training.
  • B2 Eligibility to sit the qualifying examination for a specialist postgraduate veterinary infectious diseases qualification (i.e. Diploma of the American College of Infectious Diseases, or Royal College of Pathologists) within 1 year of appointment.
  • B3 A good track record of development and delivery of teaching.
  • B4 Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

  • C1 Expertise across the field corresponding to training and qualifications, and the ability to provide expert advice to internal and external clinicians and researchers.
  • C2 Excellent communication skills both orally and written.
  • C3 Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills.

Experience
  • E1 Experience of veterinary clinical practice.
  • For Appointment at Grade 8: E2 Experience of clinical work in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory.
Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7/8, £39,347 - £44,263/ £48,350 - £56,021 per annum pro rata.

This post is part-time, 14 hours per week to cover maternity leave for up to 12 months or until the substantive postholder returns.
