Job Summary

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is seeking a highly skilled tradesperson to join our Estates Department as a Mechanical Fitter/Plumber/Maintenance Engineer. This is a challenging role that requires the ability to perform complex and non-routine tasks, working on a wide range of engineering plant and equipment.

Main Responsibilities
  • Carry out mechanical work on a diverse range of equipment and plant, adhering to Health Technical Memorandum (HTM) requirements and guidelines.
  • Act as a Competent Person (CP) for relevant disciplines, ensuring compliance with HTM regulations.
  • Plan and manage day-to-day work, coordinating with contractors and other staff members to arrange for tasks to be completed.
  • Design, manufacture, assemble, and install new work, ensuring high-quality standards are met.
  • Carry out tasks effectively and efficiently, instructing others on aspects of the trade as required.
  • Work collaboratively with other trades, participating in the operation of engineering planned maintenance systems.
  • Join the On-Call system, responding to out-of-hours emergency calls to make safe or repair equipment, communicating with affected staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Carry a Trust communication device, responding to urgent requests from the Line Manager during working hours.
  • Respond to fire calls and assist as directed on site.
About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team, supporting various areas across all sites in maintaining and upgrading the Estates. As a Mechanical Fitter/Plumber/Maintenance Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring the overall condition of the Estates is kept to a high standard, in line with current regulations.

Person Specification
  • NVQ 3 or a completed recognized apprenticeship in a relevant base trade, or relevant experience within a trade specialism.
  • Health and Safety Qualifications or modules of technical qualifications (IOSH One Day Working Safely, CSCS Gold card). City and Guilds 2391/4/5 Inspection & Testing.
  • Background of mechanical work in the building industry/maintenance work.
  • A clear understanding of health and safety procedures in theory and practical application.
  • Significant experience post-apprenticeship.
  • Relevant experience of NHS hospital environment.
  • Installation and/or maintenance experience in an industrial or domestic or commercial setting.
  • PLC knowledge and experience.
Key Skills
  • Ability to interpret and work from drawings and specifications.
  • Demonstrable ability to interpret and fault-find on a diverse range of complex mechanical/electrical systems and installations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with others, mainly verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrable competence in dealing with difficult and/or stressful circumstances.
  • Ability to instruct others in relation to their designated task.
  • Ability to work without supervision.
  • Awareness of limits of own knowledge and ability/willingness to seek guidance and support.
