Role Overview

Reporting to the Finance Director, the Project Controller serves as a vital link between finance and operations, acting as a financial business partner for the project management team. The Project Controller collaborates closely with Project Managers and Business Sector Managers to generate, analyze, and present precise financial data, including for smaller subsidiary companies directly connected to the projects. This data supports operational decision-making and assists finance in fulfilling monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting obligations, including year-end statutory accounts.

Additionally, the Project Controller aids other managers in ensuring compliance with all relevant tax, payroll, and employment regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

Oversee the financial and administrative framework of projects, including collaboration with the estimating team to develop project budgets. Work with the Project Manager to track project progress and prepare monthly financial Budget Control Reports (BCRs), articulating the narrative behind the numbers and clarifying the financial implications of their decisions. Support the Quantity Surveyor in ensuring timely and accurate sales applications and invoices, monitoring overdue invoices as necessary. Review and code purchase invoices for approval. Maintain accurate financial records through effective monitoring, review, and approval of various postings, journal entries, and ledger accounts. Identify and report opportunities, risks, and deadlines/contractual obligations (especially financial). Analyze and report on project financials, including budget variances, cash flow forecasts, and balance sheet positions (accruals, WIP, etc.). Assist managers in ensuring project compliance with internal policies and external laws and regulations, such as payroll and tax (CIS / VAT). Serve as the primary contact for project financial inquiries. Communicate actively with other departments before, during, and after projects to share lessons learned and best practices. Collaborate with auditors to provide requested information. Update monthly and quarterly management accounting schedules, sending them for review to relevant budget holders and inputting them into the financial reporting system.

Qualifications:

Relevant financial qualification, e.g., AAT qualified, CIMA finalist Strong written and verbal communication skills Proficient in Microsoft Excel Excellent attention to detail Knowledge of taxes, including VAT, CT, and PAYE Familiarity with CIS is preferable. Right to Work in the UK.

Desirable but not essential:

Experience in budget control Experience in a relevant sector Familiarity with an ERP accounting system

Additional Information:

Your team: You will work as a Project Controller in the Finance Business Unit. Where you will work: You will be based at the Westminster House in Fareham with some travel within the UK and Ireland, and occasional requirements to work away from home on project sites. Hybrid work is available. Full/part-time job: The position of Project Controller is a full-time role.
