The Bexley OPMH Psychological Therapy Team delivers a comprehensive range of evidence-based psychological interventions and support across all OPMH services. The successful candidate will integrate into the established multi-disciplinary teams of the CMHT and Memory Service, alongside a respected and growing group of Psychological Therapy professionals.

Key Responsibilities

The post-holder will deliver a thorough assessment and therapeutic service, which includes neuropsychological evaluations, individual, family, and group therapy for clients and their caregivers, as well as contributing to the therapeutic functions of the teams through training, supervision, consultation, and psychological formulation. The post-holder will report to the OPMH Head of Psychological Therapies, receiving specialized clinical supervision within the OPMH service, and will be supported by the CMHT and Memory Service team leaders.

We promote research and evaluation interests, including collaborative research with our service users through our co-led Research-Net group. Supervision and continuing professional development (CPD) are prioritized within the Trust, offering a variety of training and specialized supervision opportunities, along with a newly qualified CPD program. The Trust's Psychological Therapists possess diverse therapeutic skills, including group analysis, psychotherapy, MBT, CBT, DBT, EMDR, art and family therapy, and neuropsychology. We welcome students from various professions to help nurture the next generation of clinical staff. Clinical Responsibilities

  • Conduct specialized psychological assessments for clients referred to OPMH teams, utilizing appropriate methods to interpret and integrate complex data from various sources.
  • Formulate and implement treatment plans for clients experiencing dementia or mental health challenges, based on sound conceptual frameworks and evidence.
  • Deliver a range of psychological interventions for individuals, caregivers, families, and groups, while adjusting and refining psychological formulations as necessary.
  • Evaluate and make informed decisions regarding treatment options, considering theoretical and therapeutic models alongside complex historical and developmental factors.
  • Exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment, and discharge of clients managed under psychologically based care plans.
  • Provide specialist psychological advice, guidance, and consultation to other professionals, contributing to client formulation, diagnosis, and treatment planning.
  • Contribute to a psychologically informed framework of understanding and care for the benefit of all clients and the service across various settings and agencies.
  • Conduct risk assessments and management for individual clients, offering advice to other professionals on psychological aspects of risk assessment and management.
  • Act as the lead professional when appropriate, overseeing the planning and review of care plans in collaboration with clients, their caregivers, referring agents, and others involved in the care network.

Communication Skills

  • Communicate sensitively and effectively regarding the assessment, formulation, and treatment plans of clients, monitoring progress throughout the care process.

Teaching, Training, and Supervision

  • Receive regular clinical supervision from a senior psychologist and, when appropriate, other senior professional colleagues.
  • Continue to gain broader post-qualification experience in psychology.
  • Develop skills in professional post-graduate teaching, training, and supervision, providing guidance to other MDT staff in their psychological work.
  • Supervise assistant/graduate psychologists and contribute to the training of trainee psychologists.
  • Participate in the pre and post-qualification education of relevant healthcare staff.

Research and Service Evaluation

  • Utilize theory, evidence-based literature, and research to support evidence-based practice in your work.
  • Engage in appropriate research and provide guidance to other staff involved in research activities.
  • Manage projects, including complex audits and service evaluations.

IT Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate proficiency in IT for email, intranet, recording, and monitoring purposes.
  • Be familiar with word processing, database, and statistical software, utilizing these tools for complex data analysis as required.

Management and Leadership

  • Contribute to the development, evaluation, and monitoring of the team's operational policies and services through the application of professional skills in research, service evaluation, and audit.
  • Advise service and professional management on psychological and organizational matters requiring attention.
  • Manage assistant, graduate, and trainee psychologists, overseeing workload and implementing relevant HR policies.
  • Participate in the shortlisting and interviewing process for assistant/graduate psychologists or other staff members.
  • Lead initiatives to support and enhance the service, such as facilitating team-building events or supervising non-psychological therapy staff.

General Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the maintenance of the highest professional standards of practice through active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programs.
  • Support the development and articulation of best practices in psychology across the service by continuing to cultivate the skills of a reflective and reflexive scientist-practitioner, engaging in regular professional supervision, and staying informed about current developments in the field.
  • Maintain exemplary standards of clinical record-keeping, including electronic data entry, report writing, and responsible professional governance in accordance with the relevant professional codes of practice.
  • Stay updated on legislation, national and local policies, and issues related to dementia and mental health.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Completion of a British Psychological Society accredited Doctoral Level postgraduate professional training course in clinical or counselling psychology.
  • Eligibility for entry onto the HCPC Register of Practitioner Psychologists.

Desirable

  • Training in psychological interventions applicable in trauma or loss contexts (e.g., tf-CBT; EMDR).
  • Completion of a training course in clinical supervision.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience working under supervision in secondary care mental health services.
  • Experience in specialist psychological assessment and delivering Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and other evidence-based interventions for clients with complex psychological needs.
  • Experience conducting post-doctoral research, audits, or service evaluation projects.

Desirable

  • Experience in a specialist perinatal mental health service or mental health service in maternity.
  • Experience in co-producing services and/or collaborating with peer support workers.
  • Experience in teaching, training, and/or supervision.
  • Experience addressing diversity issues within local communities.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Understanding of specialized psychological assessments and interventions for women facing mental health challenges during the perinatal period.
  • Awareness of the effects of maternal mental illness on infants, including the impact on mother-infant relationships.
  • Doctoral-level knowledge of psychological research methodologies and complex statistical analysis.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of legislation related to the client group and mental health issues, child and adult protection, and equalities.
  • Understanding of factors influencing the acceptability and accessibility of mental health care.
