About the Role

We are seeking an experienced economist to join our team as a Principal Economist – Transport. This is a senior role that requires expertise in economic analysis and transport policy. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing economic advice to the Transport Directorate and leading the development of analytical work programmes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide economic advice to the Transport Directorate on policy proposals and strategies.
  • Develop and lead analytical work programmes to inform policy and delivery priorities.
  • Lead the procurement of a new transport model and ensure it is fit for purpose.
  • Lead on the production or commissioning of economic dimensions of business cases, applying Green Book principles.
  • Work with the data and intelligence team to identify, analyse and interpret data and insights to develop compelling cases for change.
  • Contract with consultants and manage their delivery to time and quality.
  • Lead accountability for the development of SYMCA's economics capability on transport.
  • Manage and develop other analysts in the team.
Requirements
  • An undergraduate or postgraduate degree in economics or equivalent transport qualification with a significant economics component.
  • Significant practical experience of applying economics concepts to policy issues in transport.
  • The ability to identify policy priorities and shape an analytical work programme accordingly.
  • Experience in commissioning and interpreting technical transport modelling and applying this to policy development.
  • Ability to make strategic links between economics, transport and outcomes for people.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience building constructive working relationships and engaging with internal and external partners.
  • A track record of working at pace on concurrent projects.
