About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Civil Engineering Lead to join our Eastern Routes Capital Programmes team. As a key member of the Renewals leadership team, you will be responsible for developing and managing the team structure and processes to deliver and review engineering outputs to support the programme schedule, budget, and quality requirements.

Key Accountabilities
  1. Develop and manage the team structure and processes to deliver and review engineering outputs to support the programme schedule, budget, and quality requirements.
  2. Identify and manage the introduction of new systems on the network, where applicable, including systems/safety approvals and monitoring.
  3. Develop safety, quality, and environmental approvals processes within the programme, including staff development and competence.
  4. Identify and manage the programme engineering budget, providing support information to determine the overall programme budget.
  5. Manage all engineering and project development activities to deliver schemes that are affordable, meet Programme requirements, and are safe and environmentally responsible.
  6. Provide professional functional leadership for engineering within the programme, as part of the wider Eastern Region Capital Programmes Central Engineering community.
  7. Manage the appropriate validation and verification of engineering activity.
Essential Requirements
  • Chartered Engineer with relevant successful experience of civils discipline project delivery within the Railway Industry or other complex industries/projects.
  • University degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Membership of an appropriate Professional Institution (ICE, IMechE, IET).
  • Relevant experience of railway engineering systems and equipment, and implementation.
  • Construction design management competence.
  • Demonstrable experience of actively building internal and external networks to support delivery.
  • Demonstrable ability to clearly explain change initiatives and provide constructive challenge driving continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrable capability of translating business goals into clear priorities and responsibilities, driving minimal viable product solutions for efficient delivery.
  • Successful experience of promoting physical and mental well-being and safety of colleagues and proactively identifying and acting on key business and/or safety risks.
  • Proven experience of managing interrelated and complex issues across business processes and teams.
Desirable Requirements
  • Relevant experience of being part of a senior leadership team and managing multiple staff across differing locations.
  • Proven track record of coaching and addressing team and individual capability requirements.
  • Chartered engineer in a relevant discipline.
  • Membership of an appropriate Professional Institution (ICE, IMechE, IET).
  • University degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Experience of large programmes/projects.
  • Experience of leading railway engineering design & development works.
