Position Overview
We are seeking to appoint a Band 5 Clinical Speech and Language Specialist to join our dedicated stroke service team. This role is ideal for a recent graduate or an individual with prior Band 5 experience who is interested in managing an adult patient caseload. The successful candidate will collaborate within the multidisciplinary team at our healthcare facilities.
We are looking for a passionate and driven speech and language specialist who is keen to develop their skills while contributing innovative ideas to our service. Strong interpersonal, communication, and analytical abilities are essential. You will be expected to work autonomously while also seeking guidance and mentorship from senior team members when necessary.
Key Responsibilities
- The successful candidate will be part of a team of therapists providing care across the inpatient stroke pathway. They will collaborate with experienced therapists and have access to ongoing support.
- Manage a defined patient caseload with a level of independence, while receiving regular guidance from the speech and language therapy team.
- Conduct assessments to identify, evaluate, and diagnose communication and swallowing disorders, selecting suitable patients and therapy types for effective intervention.
- Enhance clinical competencies and professional knowledge through practical experience, training, and supervision, working towards proficiency in designated areas of patient care.
- Participate in the mentorship of students with appropriate support.
- Assist in overseeing the activities of speech and language therapy assistants and volunteers as needed.
- Engage in the creation and delivery of training programs for colleagues.

Required Qualifications
- Accredited Speech and Language Therapy Degree or equivalent.
- Health Professions Council License to Practice.
- Registered Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
Experience and Skills
- Essential: Experience managing an adult caseload and expertise in dysphagia.
- Desirable: Level A dysphagia competencies and varied clinical placements in adult speech and language therapy.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen, empathize, and communicate effectively.
- Ability to reflect on practice and collaborate with peers and supervisors.
Special Requirements
- Must be able to travel throughout the region as required for cross-site responsibilities.
