Job Overview

As a Culinary Specialist for Prepared Foods, you will engage in all aspects of food preparation and upkeep of the cold case, fresh pack, salad, and hot bars. Your role is vital in ensuring the quality and presentation of food items while adhering to cleanliness and stocking protocols. It is essential to maintain a positive company image by delivering friendly and efficient service to customers and fellow Team Members consistently. All tasks must align with team and store Standard Operating Procedures, and you should be ready to perform duties associated with other Team Member roles as needed. You will also be expected to support Whole Foods Market's core values and objectives, promote various programs and initiatives, and comply with all relevant health and safety regulations, including Food Safety and departmental responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Prepare food items for the cold case, fresh pack, salad, and hot bars following production guidelines. Adhere to recipes to ensure quality and consistency in food preparation. Ensure all prepared items are appropriately labeled, dated, covered, and monitored for quality and freshness. Monitor food inventory levels and replenish as necessary. Arrive at your workstation punctually, well-groomed, and ready to work; fulfill all scheduled shifts and participate in required training and meetings. Deliver exceptional customer service, addressing customer needs promptly and effectively while demonstrating suggestive selling techniques; respond to phone calls and pages courteously. Enhance sales potential through effective procedures for food preparation, storage, rotation, stocking, and merchandising. Follow established procedures for Weights and Measures, health and sanitation, and safe work practices. Maintain a clean and sanitary working and shopping environment; ensure equipment is kept in accordance with cleanliness and safety standards; keep walk-ins and freezers organized and clean. Execute opening, mid, and closing duties as assigned; verify accuracy of signage and pricing. Report safety hazards and violations immediately. Perform additional duties as assigned by store, regional, or national leadership.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Comprehensive product knowledge. Ability to follow recipes accurately. Strong understanding of food production and basic cooking techniques. Good foundational math skills. Excellent communication skills and a willingness to collaborate as part of a team. Ability to convey information clearly and respectfully to Team Members, customers, and vendors. Meet customer service expectations and standards in all interactions. Follow directions and procedures effectively; possess strong time management and organizational skills. Passion for natural foods and Whole Foods Market's mission. Strong work ethic and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. Understanding of and compliance with Whole Foods Market quality standards.

Desired Experience

6-12 months of experience in a retail environment.

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. In an 8-hour workday: standing/walking for 6-8 hours. Hand use: single grasping, fine manipulation, pushing, and pulling. Required motions include bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching. Exposure to FDA-approved cleaning chemicals. Exposure to varying temperatures: below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (freezing), 32-40 degrees Fahrenheit (refrigerators), above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Ability to work in both wet and dry conditions. Flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required. Proficient use of tools and equipment, including knives, box cutters, electric pallet jacks, and other machinery. May require the use of ladders.
