About the Role

The Scottish Prison Service is seeking a highly skilled Financial Manager to join our Headquarters team. As a key member of our corporate directorate, you will play a crucial role in delivering financial support to our functions.

As a Financial Manager, you will work closely with our Directors and senior management to help deliver financial plans, sharing knowledge and ideas, providing input into business as usual and ad hoc project work. You will confidently share knowledge, ideas, and drive forward the finance agenda of strong financial management, risk, accountability, and governance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Financial Management: Lead the directorate financial management, including preparation and submission of monthly variance reports, forecast outturns, and annual financial planning submissions.
  • Financial Reporting: Responsible for the management and reporting of month-end processes, including accruals, prepayments, and reconciliations.
  • Financial Planning: Plan and manage the annual financial planning exercise for the directorate, supporting Directors and senior managers in their financial submissions.
  • Project and Programme Management (PPM): An understanding of PPM, facilitating the monitoring of major projects within the directorate, ensuring accurate reporting of forecasts, categorization of spend, VAT treatment, profiling, and the impact on current and future budgets.
  • People Management: Educate and train non-finance colleagues in SPS' Policies and Procedures, ensuring staff have the necessary skills to carry out their role.
Requirements
  • Possession of a CCAB accountancy qualification, or in final year of qualification.
  • Financial management experience, including management of control accounts and financial reconciliations, budget/forecast setting, management, and analysis.
  • Financial planning experience, including management of accounts payable and receivable ledgers, calculation of accruals and prepayments, and variance analysis.
  • Financial reporting experience, including report writing and briefing to inform organizational direction and delivery.
  • Business improvement skills, including ability to assess and review information, recognize potential issues, and interrogate and interpret financial/business data.
