Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Specialist Occupational Therapist to join our team at The Disabilities Trust. As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, you will be responsible for providing high-quality occupational therapy services to individuals with acquired brain injuries.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide occupational therapy input to service users with acquired brain injuries.
  • Lead on occupational therapy provision within the service, ensuring that services are delivered in accordance with best practice and evidence-based guidelines.
  • Liaise with internal and external professionals, family members, and service users to ensure seamless care coordination.
  • Manage and prioritize a caseload of service users with complex mental and physical health needs and/or challenging behavior.
  • Complete the occupational therapy process, using evidence-based and service-user-centered principles to assess, formulate, implement, and evaluate interventions.
  • Develop and implement programs of care, ensuring adequate and detailed handover of programs to rehabilitation support workers or therapy assistants.
  • Delegate tasks appropriately, taking responsibility for handover, monitoring, and review.
  • Use highly developed interpersonal skills and empathy to engage service users and families who may be resistant to the rehabilitation process or distressed.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate documentation, adhering to Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) guidance and producing professional reports demonstrating highly specialist knowledge.
  • Work collaboratively with service users, family members, and outside agencies to establish service-user-centered therapeutic goals that promote service-user choices.
  • Support the clinical lead in maintaining contact with family and other outside agencies, coordinating the rehabilitation program, and facilitating discharge planning.
  • Assess for, issue, and refer to outside agencies for appropriate equipment, ensuring adequate training for staff, service users, and family members.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate goal-directed group interventions, having an overview of the needs of the service in relation to group interventions.
  • Provide intervention and advice on social and lifestyle needs, referring to other agencies and services as necessary.
  • Work within infection control and health and safety guidelines to deal appropriately with conditions related to service-user contact.
Leadership and Professional Development
  • Manage a designated workload, identifying priorities and managing time and resources effectively.
  • Act as a role model, taking responsibility for monitoring quality in the work of others where tasks have been delegated or a supervisory relationship is established.
  • Support and challenge others to maintain health, safety, and security at work, reporting actual or potential problems and suggesting solutions.
  • Understand and navigate the political and economic climate, locally, nationally, and internationally, which impacts on service delivery.
  • Promote the profession and the organization, using and developing partnerships across organization and agency boundaries.
  • Take an active role in the occupational therapy and clinical specialty's clinical governance arrangements and quality agenda.
  • Support the service manager in recruitment of OT staff, students, and volunteers.
  • Provide operational leadership for quality improvement and service development projects, in conjunction with stakeholders.
