About the Role

The Vision Support Team is seeking a dedicated and passionate Qualified Teacher of the Visually Impaired. We invite applications from individuals who possess the PGDip/MA Mandatory Qualification for Teachers of Children and Young People with Visual Impairment and have experience in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

The Vision Support Service comprises a collaborative team of Qualified Teachers of the Visually Impaired (QTVIs), Resource Technicians, Assistive Technology Specialists, and Practitioners.

The successful candidate will manage a caseload of visually impaired children across diverse environments, including mainstream and special educational institutions, nurseries, and family settings. Responsibilities will include conducting assessments, providing direct instruction in braille, and fostering visual awareness and understanding through guidance and training for families, educational establishments, and early years settings.

A DBS enhanced check for a regulated activity is required for this position.

About You

To be considered for this role, you must possess:

  • A degree-level qualification and Qualified Teacher Status, along with the mandatory qualification in the education of visually impaired children and additional training in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to engage positively with students, parents, and other professionals, establishing effective working relationships across various educational contexts.
  • Experience in addressing the needs of visually impaired children in both mainstream and special educational settings, as well as providing support to preschool children and their families.
  • Knowledge of effective teaching methodologies, assistive technology, and the ability to deliver training to enhance the attainment and inclusion of SEND pupils, particularly those with visual impairments.
  • Experience in teaching alternative tactile mediums, including braille, and familiarity with assistive technologies that facilitate learning access.
  • A strong understanding of relevant statutory and local policies regarding SEND, with the ability to execute all duties in accordance with safeguarding policies and procedures.

  • The ability to perform all tasks with reasonable adjustments, as necessary, in line with the provisions of the Equality Act 2010.
