Position Overview
The Long-Term Conditions pathway, part of the Children's Care Group within RDaSH, is looking for a dedicated Special School Nurse (Band 5). The ideal candidate will be a registered nurse who is enthusiastic about caring for children and young individuals with intricate health requirements.
This is a full-time role for a fixed term, covering maternity leave. There is potential for permanent positions to become available within the long-term conditions pathway. We are open to considering part-time hours, and there may be opportunities for hours to transition into permanent roles.
We are in search of a registered nurse who is committed to the ongoing health of children and young people with complex health needs. This position offers a high level of job satisfaction and ensures continuity of care for children and young people in specialized educational environments.
The service provides nursing care, support, and guidance to children, young people, and families attending Special Schools in the region. All services are delivered in various community settings to support the Public Health Agenda in Special Schools.
Key Responsibilities
The role of the Special School Nurse is crucial for effective multidisciplinary collaboration with educational institutions and local authorities. Responsibilities include:
- Writing comprehensive reports
- Attending reviews and meetings
- Implementing evidence-based care plans
- Promoting health and wellness
- Conducting health screenings
- Delivering training and workshops
- Providing face-to-face support
- Training and assessing clinical skills
- Advocating for students
- Liaising with families, professionals, and local authorities
The role also entails delivering health interventions to children with complex and profound physical, intellectual, and emotional needs. The successful candidate will be adept at providing emergency care and guidance to school staff, as well as being clinically proficient in skills such as enteral feeding and oral suction (training can be provided).
The successful candidate will join a highly skilled team within the Children's Care Group and will be an effective team member dedicated to delivering high-quality care.

Qualifications and Skills
