PhD Studentship: Future-Proofing Offshore Wind-Hydrogen Systems

The proposed project aims to develop a comprehensive mathematical modeling framework to assess and optimize offshore wind-hydrogen system (OWHS) designs, operation regimes, operation and maintenance strategies, and end-of-life strategies. The goal is to create a safe, environmentally friendly, and highly economical energy system.
BackgroundThe increasing frequency of natural disasters and climate change highlights the need for sustainable energy solutions. Offshore wind has been identified as a key component of the UK's energy mix, but its intermittent nature poses challenges. Energy storage technologies, such as green hydrogen produced by electrolysis using renewable energy, are critical for exploiting renewable resources. However, ensuring the safety and minimizing environmental impact of wind-generated green hydrogen production, storage, and transportation is a pressing issue.
Research Objectives- To develop a simulation and analysis framework for innovative OWHS designs, novel O&M strategies, and potential end-of-life strategies.
- To assess and optimize the safety, environmental, and economic aspects of future OWHSs.
- To provide a comprehensive tool for the deployment of future offshore wind farms and hydrogen production, storage, and transportation systems.
The proposed project will involve simulation and analysis of OWHS designs, O&M strategies, and end-of-life strategies, taking into account various factors such as marine environment, governmental guidance, regulations, operating conditions, production needs, location restrictions, wildlife habitats, and sea fishing areas.
Expected OutcomesThe project is expected to provide a comprehensive understanding of the safety, environmental, and economic aspects of OWHSs, enabling the development of effective tools for their assessment and optimization. This will contribute to the sustainable and healthy development of offshore wind and the integration of hydrogen production, storage, and transportation systems into existing offshore wind farms.
RequirementsThe successful candidate will be an enthusiastic graduate with a 1st class degree in engineering, computer science, maths, or a relevant discipline, at integrated Master's level or with a relevant MSc. The candidate should have a strong background in mathematical modeling and simulation, as well as excellent communication and teamwork skills.
