About the Treasury Legal Services Team
The Treasury Legal Services team comprises around 100 dedicated professionals, organized into six specialized legal units along with a Business Management Team. Each legal unit is led by a deputy director, ensuring focused oversight and expertise.
The deputy legal director oversees three teams that specialize in financial market regulations, while the remaining teams focus on critical areas such as financial sanctions, international trade negotiations, and public sector legal matters.
A Knowledge Development Lawyer, supported by a paralegal, collaborates with all teams to enhance training and knowledge sharing. Additionally, the Business Management Team provides essential support in areas such as budgeting, human resources, and operational management.
Role Purpose
The primary objective of this role is to provide strategic legal leadership within the Treasury Legal Services Division, contributing to the overall direction and management of the GLD. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with legal colleagues and policy advisors to ensure the delivery of high-quality legal services.

- Foster an environment where legal analysis is embedded in decision-making processes and organizational culture.
- Exhibit exceptional leadership to team members, focusing on coaching and professional development.
- Contribute to the broader leadership of the GLD, ensuring the provision of outstanding legal services to government entities.
Successful candidates must be willing to obtain the necessary security clearance prior to commencing the role.
Candidate Profile
To qualify for this position, candidates must be legally qualified to practice as a solicitor, barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive in England and Wales. This includes overseas lawyers with the appropriate exemptions.
Essential Criteria

- Outstanding communication abilities, capable of establishing credibility with senior officials and fostering collaborative relationships across various government departments.
- Proficient in managing legal workloads and resources effectively, with a focus on enhancing service delivery.
- Strong leadership skills to inspire and empower a diverse team, promoting a culture of continuous learning and knowledge sharing.
- A commitment to diversity and inclusion, aligned with the core values of integrity, honesty, objectivity, and impartiality.
Qualifications
Applicants should possess a minimum of a 2:1 honors degree in any discipline or an equivalent overseas qualification. GLD will also consider candidates with substantial professional achievements in lieu of a degree.
Chartered Legal Executives may apply if they meet specific academic criteria or have completed relevant legal qualifications.
Benefits
In addition to a competitive salary, the Government Legal Department offers a comprehensive benefits package, including contributions to a defined benefit pension scheme, tailored learning and development opportunities, flexible working arrangements, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace culture.
