Position Overview
An exceptional opportunity has emerged for a skilled and dedicated physiotherapist to become a vital member of our esteemed Pediatric team. This role is ideal for a current Band 6 or Band 5 Physiotherapist eager to enhance and broaden their assessment and treatment capabilities within our Pediatric service. This is a permanent position within the Pediatric Physiotherapy department.
The ideal candidate will possess experience in both inpatient and outpatient Pediatric physiotherapy within an acute care setting. Previous experience across a diverse range of specialties, including acute medicine, neurology, respiratory care, orthopedics, musculoskeletal conditions, and significant trauma, will be advantageous. If you are seeking to advance your career in this dynamic field and thrive in a fast-paced environment, this position offers an excellent opportunity. You will receive support from seasoned Team Leaders and regular opportunities for continuing professional development (CPD) and training.
The successful applicant will be expected to participate in a respiratory on-call service for both adult and pediatric patients. A comprehensive on-call competency framework and pathway will be provided to assist staff in this role.
Main Responsibilities
To deliver a high-quality physiotherapy service to Pediatric patients.
Conduct specialized neuromusculoskeletal and respiratory assessments for your patient caseload, which may include complex cases, and develop treatment plans based on these evaluations as an independent practitioner.
Assist Team Leaders in the planning, coordination, delivery, and evaluation of the Physiotherapy Service provided to patients within the team on a daily basis.
Manage your own caseload of patients, who may present with complex conditions, and maintain accurate records as an independent practitioner.
Occasional community or home visits may be required.
Act as a deputy for Team Leaders when necessary.
Perform advanced physiotherapeutic assessments for patients with diverse and complex physical and psychological conditions, providing diagnoses and developing tailored treatment programs.
Maintain collaborative relationships with senior physiotherapy staff across wards, intensive care units, community pediatrics, clinics, consultants, and other therapists.
Take responsibility for your own caseload and manage a specific area of the service or a particular patient demographic, working autonomously. Senior support and supervision will be provided through regular formal training, clinical reasoning sessions, peer reviews, and case conferences.

Clinical Responsibilities
- Be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of your work, including patient management.

- Conduct thorough assessments of patients, including those with complex presentations, utilizing advanced clinical reasoning and manual assessment techniques to provide accurate diagnoses.
- Develop and implement individualized physiotherapy treatment programs based on evidence-based practices and treatment options.
- Take delegated responsibility from senior physiotherapists for managing patients with specific conditions and provide specialized assessment and treatment plans.
- Formulate accurate prognoses and recommend optimal intervention strategies, creating comprehensive management plans.
- Ensure patient understanding of treatment proposals, obtain valid informed consent, and work within legal frameworks for patients who may lack capacity to consent.
- Utilize a variety of communication tools to effectively engage with patients and their families, motivating and facilitating rehabilitation and treatment programs.
- Evaluate patient progress, reassess, and modify treatment plans as necessary.
- Manage clinical risks within your caseload and report incidents and near misses.
- Adhere to trust clinical guidelines and maintain a strong understanding of national and local standards.
- Occasionally work as a lone practitioner in community settings with telephone support from senior physiotherapists.
- Participate in the respiratory evening and weekend on-call rota and provide seven-day services in medical, surgical, cardiothoracic, and critical care settings.
- When on-call, assess and treat acutely ill patients with respiratory, orthopedic, or neurological issues, maintaining records as an independent practitioner.
- Provide guidance to medical and nursing staff regarding patient management during on-call duties.
- Train and supervise junior staff, technical instructors, assistants, and students, with support from senior physiotherapy team members.
- Represent the physiotherapy service at multidisciplinary team meetings to ensure coordinated patient care and integrate physiotherapy into treatment plans.
- Ensure the safe and competent use of all therapeutic equipment by patients and verify that junior staff attain necessary competencies.
Professional Development
- Maintain your professional competency through continuing professional development activities and keep a portfolio reflecting your personal growth.
- Actively participate in in-service training programs, tutorials, individual training sessions, external courses, and peer reviews.
- Ensure that your practice and that of any supervised staff meet the required professional standards.
Organizational Responsibilities
- Engage in the staff appraisal process and adhere to your personal development plans to meet established competencies.
- Assist in the collection of data for service audits and research initiatives as directed.
- Ensure the safe and competent use of therapeutic equipment through teaching and supervision.
- Organize and prioritize your caseload to meet service and patient needs, adjusting plans as necessary.

Knowledge and Experience Requirements
Essential
- Demonstrable experience in Pediatric inpatient and outpatient services.
- Broad postgraduate clinical experience in neurology, acute respiratory care, trauma, and orthopedics/musculoskeletal conditions.
- Experience in teaching and clinical education.
- Evidence of contributions to the clinical education and supervision of less experienced staff, students, or assistants.
- Proven record of relevant continuing professional development.
- Awareness of current NHS and health issues related to pediatrics.
Desirable
- Experience at a senior level within Pediatric inpatient and outpatient services in an acute setting.
- Previous experience in a major trauma center.
- Completion of a clinical educator course.
- Experience within an acute NHS environment.
Qualifications
