About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Specialty Doctor to join our Medical Day Unit team at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust. As a key member of our oncology service, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the development of our service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide expert clinical care to patients attending the Medical Day Unit, working closely with consultants and other healthcare professionals to ensure seamless care delivery.
  • Assess patients for their fitness for treatment and arrange necessary investigations to inform treatment decisions.
  • Prescribe systemic oncology treatments as per consultant-led treatment plans, ensuring accurate and timely administration.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and their families, providing clear information on disease management, treatment side effects, and other relevant details.
  • Contribute to outpatient and prescription clinics, working collaboratively with nursing, pharmacy, and front-of-house teams to achieve an excellent patient experience.
  • Take informed consent from patients undergoing systemic treatment, ensuring they are fully aware of the treatment plan and any associated risks.
  • Maintain accurate and contemporaneous documentation on the electronic notes system, ensuring effective communication and record-keeping.
  • Make referrals to specialist services as required, working closely with colleagues to ensure seamless care pathways.
  • Work effectively with the nursing, pharmacy, and front-of-house teams to achieve an excellent streamlined service for patients and their relatives.
  • Review patients who attend the unit who may become unwell, working in conjunction with the inpatient team where necessary.
  • Manage acute clinical incidents on the medical day unit, ensuring prompt and effective response to patient needs.
  • Provide teaching and training to medical, nursing, and pharmacy staff on the unit, sharing expertise and knowledge to enhance patient care.
  • Comply with all clinical and non-clinical mandatory training required by the Trust, ensuring ongoing professional development and competence.
Person Specification

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Specialty Doctor who possesses the following essential qualities:

  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent qualifications.
  • Full registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council (or eligible for GMC registration).
  • Broad-based experience in oncology, including systemic therapies, at SpR level or equivalent.
  • Four years' full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed-term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty (or equivalent experience and competencies).

Desirable qualities include experience in clinical and translational research, as well as strong communication and leadership skills.
