Position Overview

The Respiratory Virus Unit (RVU) operates within the Virus Reference Department (VRD) at UKHSA Reference Services. As the WHO National Influenza Centre for the UK, RVU plays a pivotal role in the identification and analysis of various respiratory viral pathogens. The unit is recognized globally as one of the WHO Reference Laboratories for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and collaborates with WHO to provide essential technical support to national laboratories.

Key Responsibilities:

As a Healthcare Scientist, you will be entrusted with the following duties:
• Development and implementation of serological and molecular techniques for the detection and assessment of respiratory viral infections, including influenza and SARS. This encompasses support for seroepidemiology and high-throughput studies.
• Engage in the creation and utilization of viral protein expression systems.

Specific Duties Include:
• Conducting specialized virological, technical, and scientific activities on samples received from various NHS, UKHSA, academic, and commercial laboratories.
• Innovating and applying methodologies to investigate serological responses to infections and vaccinations, ensuring these methods are validated for broader diagnostic applications.
• Assisting in the establishment and management of externally funded research initiatives.
• Handling Containment Level 3 (CL3) samples with appropriate safety measures.
• Supporting the training and performance monitoring of laboratory staff.
• Maintaining a comprehensive understanding of clinical virology and ensuring continual professional development.
• Promptly communicating significant or unusual results to senior and medical staff, while addressing any complaints or discrepancies swiftly.
• Fostering effective communication within the virology team and with other healthcare professionals, while upholding high standards of professional competence in all laboratory tests and investigations.

Qualifications:

To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following essential criteria:
• A university degree in biological sciences, with relevant laboratory experience in microbiology or virology.
• Proven ability to work independently across all areas of the Virology laboratory, demonstrating accuracy in all tasks.
• Practical and theoretical expertise in microbiology/virology, including experience with recombinant viral proteins and molecular detection techniques.
• Competence in analyzing complex data, interpreting results, and effectively communicating findings both verbally and in writing.
• Capability to organize and manage workload, while training and guiding less experienced staff.
• Familiarity with quality systems such as UKAS ISO15189 and GCP, along with safe working practices.
• Self-motivated and adaptable, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
