Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Diabetes Education Specialist to join our team.

In this role, you will play a vital part in empowering individuals with diabetes to manage their condition effectively through education and support. You will work closely with patients, providing tailored guidance on healthy lifestyle choices, medication management, and self-monitoring techniques.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver engaging and informative diabetes education programs to patients of diverse backgrounds and needs.
  • Assess individual patient requirements and develop personalized education plans.
  • Provide clear and concise information on diabetes management, including nutrition, exercise, and medication adherence.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and documentation.
Qualifications & Experience

Essential Requirements:

  • Relevant qualification in diet/nutrition or a health-related field.
  • Further degree in a related subject is desirable.
  • DESMOND Accredited Educator status or willingness to obtain it.
  • Experience working in an educational or healthcare setting focused on nutrition.
  • Proven interest in health and well-being.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Experience within a patient care environment or the healthcare sector.
  • Desktop Publishing skills.
  • Experience in collating and summarizing data/audit reports.
  • Proven experience working in multicultural environments.
Knowledge & Skills

Essential:

  • Awareness of diabetes education programs and best practices.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Clear diction and the ability to communicate fluently in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to simplify complex medical information for enhanced patient understanding.
  • Proficiency in writing concise reports.
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Adaptability in communication style to cater to diverse audiences (e.g., individuals with hearing impairments, non-English speakers, elderly patients).
  • Excellent telephone communication skills for engaging with patients.
  • Understanding and sensitivity towards cultural variations, age groups, and individuals from different backgrounds and abilities.
  • Ability to organize and manage workload effectively.
  • Flexibility and reliability in fulfilling responsibilities.
  • Willingness to travel within the community.
  • Capacity to perform moderate to intense physical tasks as required.
