Derby, Derby, United Kingdom Alstom Full time

Position ID: 461241

Location: Derby

Employment Type: Permanent

Compensation: Approximately £55,000 based on experience

At Alstom, we are dedicated to understanding transportation systems and the movement of people. Our extensive portfolio includes high-speed trains, metros, monorails, trams, and comprehensive systems, services, infrastructure, signalling, and digital mobility solutions. With a workforce of 80,000, we are committed to advancing greener and smarter mobility worldwide, connecting urban areas while reducing carbon emissions and reliance on automobiles.

Alstom stands as the premier provider of new trains and train services in the UK & Ireland, as well as a key player in signalling and rail infrastructure. We have constructed or are in the process of constructing nearly 40% of the UK’s mainline train fleet, including the entire fleets servicing London Underground and Dublin Luas. Our offerings encompass a wide array of intelligent solutions in the rail sector, from cutting-edge high-speed rolling stock to maintenance, modernization, infrastructure, and signalling.

Your Role

This position presents an excellent opportunity to join our team as a Welding Engineer, where you will oversee the industrial management of Special Processes (SP) Welding throughout various phases including tendering, product development, industrialization, manufacturing, and warranty support.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Ensuring adherence to welding standards and protocols relevant to railway contracts, in accordance with the EN15085 series and Alstom guidelines.
  • Contributing to the tendering process, particularly in product design and industrialization efforts.
  • Participating in specification and design phases to inform technical solution decisions related to special processes.
  • Developing the SP REX and collaborating with product engineering to adjust designs as necessary.
  • Managing industrial risks through Process FMEA and implementing associated improvement action plans.
  • Establishing requirements and guidelines for the tooling necessary to initiate production.
  • Validating the product/process pairing and the industrial means to be implemented in accordance with the design.
  • Supporting technicians under your supervision.
  • Conducting Transfer of Technology on SP: including documentation, process and means validation, and training.
  • Demonstrating improvements in Quality, Cost, Delivery (QCD), and Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) linked to SP through effective action plans.
  • Engaging in meetings and working groups within the SP network.
  • Proposing enhancement ideas and evolving business rules within your domain.

About You

We prioritize enthusiasm and attitude over extensive experience. While we do not expect you to possess every skill, the following qualifications will support your success and growth in this role:

  • A degree in process engineering, mechanical, or chemical engineering is highly desirable, or equivalent experience.
  • Certification and qualification by a recognized body as either a European Welding Engineer (EWE) or International Welding Engineer (IWE).
  • Significant experience in industrial methodologies.
  • Practical experience in the special process for 2 to 5 years (execution, definition, qualification).
  • Proficiency in 3D Catia.
  • Familiarity with the EN15085 Railway sector, possessing both theoretical and practical knowledge of welding processes, with recognized Level A according to UNE EN ISO 14731 standards.
  • Strong teaching abilities (capable of training groups of trainees).
  • Innovative mindset, actively participating in business and professional workgroups.
  • Personal attributes: teamwork, responsiveness, and strong interpersonal skills.

What You Will Enjoy

Join us on a transformative journey in the rail industry, where you can continuously develop new skills and experiences throughout your career.

You will also benefit from:

  • Stability, challenges, and a long-term career free from monotonous routines.
  • Collaboration with diverse teams and supportive colleagues.
  • Contribution to innovative projects.
  • The ability to steer your career in various directions across functions and countries.
  • Investment in your development through award-winning learning opportunities.
  • A fair and dynamic compensation package that recognizes your performance and potential, along with comprehensive social benefits (life, medical, pension).

You do not need to be a train enthusiast to thrive with us. We assure you that when you step onto one of our trains with friends or family, you will feel a sense of pride. If you are ready for the challenge, we look forward to hearing from you.

Our Offerings

We provide a competitive remuneration package, 25 days of annual leave plus bank holidays, with options to buy or sell holiday.
