Role Summary

The Barnsley Recovery Steps Counselling Service operates as a dedicated program within the Barnsley Drug and Alcohol Recovery Service, aimed at providing specialized counselling and therapeutic support to individuals aged 16 and above. Our mission is to assist clients in their recovery process by addressing the fundamental mental health challenges that can impact overall wellness and contribute to substance use. We adopt a holistic approach, recognizing that individuals are more than their struggles with addiction. Our team is devoted to fostering a non-judgmental and accepting atmosphere where clients can confront their difficulties and pursue personal development and healing.

Working hours: Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm


Primary Responsibilities

1. **Individual Counselling Sessions:** Conduct weekly one-on-one counselling sessions, establishing a therapeutic alliance and supportive environment to promote personal growth and emotional well-being. Build and maintain positive, trusting relationships with clients to facilitate effective counselling outcomes.

2. **Confidentiality and Professionalism:** Uphold client confidentiality with the highest level of discretion and comply with established confidentiality protocols. Adhere to cancellation policies to optimize appointment scheduling and resource management. Document detailed and accurate client notes in line with Humankind's standards and industry practices. Utilize outcome measures during client sessions.

3. **Clinical Supervision Participation:** Engage actively in regular clinical supervision sessions to enhance professional skills and maintain exemplary standards of practice.

4. **Policy Adherence and Equal Opportunities Commitment:** Rigorously follow Humankind's policies and procedures, ensuring ethical and legal compliance. Show a strong commitment to equal opportunities in all aspects of counselling practice.

5. **Professional Development:** Remain informed about the latest advancements in the field through ongoing professional development activities.

6. **Self-Care and Support:** Take initiative for personal well-being and seek support when necessary, promoting a culture of self-care.

Essential Qualifications and Skills:

- **Educational Background:** Currently training as a counsellor or therapist, or possess a minimum Level 4 qualification.

- **Relevant Experience:** Demonstrate experience in a supportive role, engaging with individuals facing mental distress, either formally or informally.

- **Counselling Approach:** Maintain a non-judgmental, respectful, and congruent approach in all counselling interactions.

- **Guideline Compliance:** Willingness to operate within BACP, UKCP, or HPCP guidelines.

- **Team Collaboration:** Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team setting.

- **Commitment to Hours:** Show dedication to maintaining regular weekly hours.

- **Mental Health Awareness:** Demonstrate understanding of mental health issues and familiarity with at least one therapeutic model and its application. Recognize the importance of confidentiality and its limitations in therapy, as well as safeguarding responsibilities.
