Position Overview:
We are looking for a dedicated Mechanical Technician to become an integral part of the Hypersonics Research Group within the Department of Engineering Science. This full-time role is essential for the operation and maintenance of our advanced high-speed wind tunnel facilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and Fabrication Support: Provide expert advice and assistance in the design and fabrication of components for wind tunnel upgrades, test models, and experimental apparatus.
- Manufacturing Expertise: Engage in the production of intricate wind tunnel models and components, aligning with ongoing development projects and immediate testing requirements.
- Tunnel Operations: Participate in the operation of wind tunnels, including the initiation of hypersonic tests, routine reconfiguration for various operational modes, and maintenance of precision components.
The successful candidate will collaborate closely with a dynamic team of researchers, including undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as postdoctoral researchers. You will also work alongside external clients from both academic and industrial sectors to devise engineering solutions for technical challenges.
Team Collaboration:
As a member of a vibrant research group, you will interact with the Hypersonic Operations Manager to plan and execute experiments and modifications to the tunnels. Additionally, you will support the Tunnel Operator in conducting tests and providing essential engineering assistance.
Skills and Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive skill set in various machining and workshop activities, with several years of experience operating a wide range of machining equipment. While not mandatory, familiarity with CNC milling, welding, rig-based installations, or modifications of pressure systems would be advantageous. A willingness to learn new skills and adapt to evolving technical support needs is essential, and appropriate training will be provided as necessary.
