Job Overview

The ideal candidate will be responsible for the assembly and upkeep of experimental setups, as well as the routine maintenance of facilities at Qdot's locations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform regular maintenance on facilities, including equipment such as 3D printers, pillar drills, workshops, and compressed air systems.
  • Implement improvements to infrastructure and workspaces, such as extending compressed air lines, painting, and installing fencing.
  • Organize storage areas for tools and parts, maintaining accurate records.
  • Assist in the installation of experimental setups, constructing new facilities or modifying existing ones.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to staff regarding the design and functionality of experimental setups, advising on materials and feasibility based on expertise.
  • Select or design necessary components to meet functional, quality, and accuracy requirements, and either manufacture or source them accordingly.
  • Install instrumentation on experimental setups.
  • Identify and resolve issues with experimental facilities.
  • Instruct colleagues on the safe operation of machinery and hand tools.
  • Communicate with management regarding the need for new equipment.
  • Engage in continuous learning and skill development.
  • Adhere to health and safety regulations, quality standards, and other relevant guidelines, instructing others on safe practices and assisting in risk assessments.
  • Maintain accurate records of working hours and tasks performed, completing necessary administrative duties.
  • Conduct work that may involve high-pressure systems and elevated work conditions.
  • Work primarily at designated locations and also at outdoor testing sites.

Selection Criteria

Essential Qualifications

  • A formal qualification in a relevant field, such as HNC, BTEC, City and Guilds, or equivalent (e.g., mechanical engineering apprenticeship).
  • A minimum of three years of experience in facility maintenance and the installation of experimental equipment.
  • Strong understanding of safety regulations applicable to workshops and laboratories.
  • Proficient IT skills for tasks such as email communication, record-keeping, and supplier research.
  • Experience with high-pressure pipework installation.
  • Able to travel and work at multiple locations.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience in a research and development environment.
  • Welding experience.
  • Experience in installing experimental instrumentation.
  • Completed training for Swagelok pipework installation.
  • Training for working at heights.
  • Training for working with pressurized gas systems.
