ART HANDLING TECHNICIAN

Location: London

The Art Handling Technician will collaborate closely with Warehouse Managers to ensure the safe receipt, handling, condition reporting, installation, de-installation, warehousing, packing, and staging of Phillips' assets in accordance with the sales, exhibitions, and events calendar. This role will primarily be based at the Phillips warehouse, with additional responsibilities at our London gallery for various installations and setups.

The work schedule will be coordinated by the Warehouse Technical Manager.

Phillips values diversity in its workforce, encouraging applicants from various backgrounds and experiences, even if all qualifications are not met.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely receive and stage property in the designated control area.
  • Unpack and uncrate items as required.
  • Conduct condition reports and update inventory records.
  • Prepare property in the Cataloguing Area for processing by Cataloguers.
  • Assist Cataloguers in safely handling all artworks.
  • Support Cataloguers with technical aspects of restoration and display preparation.
  • Regularly organize and optimize storage areas for efficiency.
  • Collaborate with the Warehouse Technical Manager to ensure all lots are photographed.
  • Assist in the installation of property in photo studios, maintaining cleanliness post-shoot.
  • Work with Warehouse Managers to ensure safe packing and transfer of lots.
  • Ensure all works are securely packed and accurately labeled prior to transfer.
  • Aid the Property Control Manager in organizing highlights and tours.
  • Assist the Specialist Department with layout planning using 3D models when applicable.
  • Collaborate with Gallery Technicians for installations and auction setups.
  • Participate in de-installation, unframing, and safe packing of sales for post-sale storage.
  • Work with the Gallery Registrar and Property Control Team to ensure accurate labeling of all lots.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment.
  • Ensure efficient use of packing materials and supplies.
  • Adhere to Phillips' Health and Safety policy while working professionally.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in fine art handling, packing, and logistics.
  • Familiarity with fine art transportation and warehousing practices.
  • Experience in a warehouse, gallery, or auction house setting is preferred.
  • Experience working with photographic equipment is beneficial.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of inventory management systems.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage professionally with diverse individuals.
  • Proficient in IT, including Microsoft Office, with a capacity for learning Phillips' inventory software.
  • Ability to work under pressure while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Willingness to work weekends and evenings as needed.

Education and Training

  • Proven experience in safe and professional art handling is essential.
  • IPAF license is desirable.
  • Full UK Driving license is preferred.
  • Current Forklift license is advantageous.
  • PASMA certificate is a plus.
  • First aid certification is beneficial.
  • Willingness to undertake relevant training courses is essential.

Personal Attributes

The ideal candidate should possess at least 2 years of relevant experience in a similar role. Reliability, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively are crucial. The candidate must remain calm under pressure, be a team player, and be open to learning new techniques and safety procedures related to art handling.

Working Conditions

  • Work is primarily conducted in the auction house warehouse facility.
  • The role involves processing and handling large quantities of property pre- and post-sale.
  • Additional work may occur at various galleries and offices.
  • The position frequently requires handling and lifting heavy works.
