Senior Intensive Care Consultant
Position Overview
We are looking for a dedicated and experienced Senior Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine to become a part of our collaborative and dynamic team at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust. This role has been created as we enhance our permanent staffing levels. Our department prides itself on being supportive and is eager to welcome a long-term colleague who can contribute their unique skills and experiences.
Incentives and Benefits
Our comprehensive Welcome Package includes a relocation allowance of £7000, an additional lump sum of £20,000, and extra 'Supporting Professional Activities' (SPA) time for the initial 24 months, as a token of appreciation for your commitment to our Trust.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will typically be expected to live within a 10-mile radius of the primary hospital location or within a 30-minute travel time for non-resident on-call duties, ensuring prompt attendance for urgent medical situations. While some consultants may reside further away during their workweek, they are expected to stay locally when on call. Guidance regarding relocation areas can be provided during visits, and relocation costs will be covered for successful candidates.
Additional responsibilities may be assigned once the new appointee is acclimated, subject to mutual agreement, which may involve non-clinical duties on-site. These will be compensated through Additional Programmed Activities (APA) within the job plan. If applicable, the appointee may also serve as an Educational Supervisor for anaesthetic trainees, with remuneration provided per trainee.
Any pre-existing consultant-level NHS responsibilities will be discussed during the interview process and can be accommodated by mutual agreement.
If the successful candidate wishes to engage in private practice, they must offer the Trust an 11th Programmed Activity prior to initiating such arrangements, in accordance with the terms and conditions.
About Our Organization
East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust is committed to delivering high-quality hospital and community healthcare services. We cater to a diverse geographical area with a population nearing 800,000 residents. Our services are provided through two main hospitals, several community hospitals, outpatient clinics, and home care services. With nearly 10,000 staff members and an annual budget exceeding £650 million, we are the largest NHS organization in the East Anglia region.
We are dedicated to enhancing care through an ambitious capital development program across our facilities, amounting to £100 million over the next five years.
We are in the process of establishing a new elective orthopaedic center at one of our hospitals, which will be among the largest in the country, ensuring that we can manage complex and low-volume cases locally for our community.
Additionally, we are developing a £7 million specialized interventional radiology and cardiac angiography unit.
At our Ipswich site, we are investing £35 million in a new Emergency Department and co-located Urgent Treatment Centre, along with enhanced diagnostic imaging capabilities. A £5.3 million molecular diagnostic laboratory is set to open soon, and plans are underway for a new Breast Care Centre and a Children's Unit.
Job Responsibilities
All consultants within the department hold a continuous and individual responsibility for the care of their patients and a collective responsibility to provide an effective service that meets the needs of the local population, within the available resources.
The proposed timetable for this position is indicative of the required workload. Negotiations regarding specific aspects may be possible following successful appointment, depending on the interests of the candidate and current service requirements.
The appointed colleague will have the opportunity to review their job plan after three months with the clinical director/clinical lead and subsequently on an annual basis.
Proposed Job Plan
Clinical sessions - Direct Clinical Care (including on-call and clinical administration)
Supporting Professional Activities
Total = 10 Programmed Activities
The tentative job plan can be provided upon request to the clinical lead.
