Systems Development Director

AWS EMEA SARL (UK Branch) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Systems Development Director to lead our operations/engineering organization for new AWS region builds.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to work with AWS infrastructure and product teams to design, deliver, operate and automate utility computing services for new AWS regions. You will assess risks, anticipate issues, overcome technical obstacles, make high-judgement trade-offs, and balance business needs with technical constraints.

The Role:

The Systems Development Director will be the single-threaded leader for Systems Development and Operations in the AWS UK region build team. The role will work to set and execute the strategic vision for operations teams in collaboration with product, sales, security, and service teams.

The leader in this role should be customer-obsessed, with the ability to balance long-term vision with near-term customer needs. The role will lead strategic initiatives and provide support to operations and development teams in the UK.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead engineering teams that design and deliver large-scale distributed systems
  • Experience in software development, systems engineering, and automation under UNIX/Linux
  • Manage engineering teams and provide support to operations and development teams
  • Problem-solving, debugging, and large-scale event management with customer-facing services
  • Hire and retain top performers and lead a high-performing team
  • Decisive, confident, and experienced with influencing others
  • Proven coaching and leadership skills, including evidence of successful succession planning
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills, demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally with multiple teams and stakeholders
  • Ability to work at all levels in the organization
  • Experience delivering successfully at pace
  • Successful track record in working on large cross-functional, cross-organizational transformation efforts
  • Experience working as part of a global team, across multiple time zones
Requirements:
  • BS degree in Computer Science or related technical field
  • MS/PhD degree in Computer Science
  • Substantial experience building and leading engineering teams
