Job Summary:
Hire Ground is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Deputy Grounds and Gardens Manager to join its team. As a key member of our horticultural team, you will be responsible for assisting the Head of Grounds and Gardens in the smooth operation of our heritage site's grounds and gardens.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the maintenance of horticultural machinery and equipment, including ride-on mowers, tractors, hedge trimmers, and leaf blowers.
- Conduct daily supervision and monitoring of Grounds and Gardens staff, ensuring timely completion of tasks and adherence to health and safety protocols.
- Participate in the development and implementation of risk assessments, health and safety checks, and machinery maintenance schedules.
- Apply and record the use of chemicals, including pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides, while maintaining and updating COSHH records.
- Perform tasks such as mowing, pruning, planting, weeding, and leaf clearing as required.
- Liaise with external agencies, contractors, and stakeholders, including the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).
- Assist in managing the day-to-day operations of the glasshouse, including propagation and production.
- Manage floristry requirements and monitor stock levels of personal protective equipment (PPE) and sundry horticultural items.
- Deputize for the Head of Grounds and Gardens at heritage site meetings and other meetings as required.
- Assist in the management of apprentice and volunteer programs.
Requirements:
- Proven experience working in a heritage landscape or similar environment.
- Strong knowledge of garden machinery and its maintenance.
- Basic plant knowledge and relevant experience in horticultural and turf culture practices.
- Horticultural or landscape management qualification at Level II or equivalent.
- Safe use of ride-on mower, compact tractor, and chemical spraying certificates (PA1/6A).
- Excellent presentation and communication skills.
- Good supervisory skills and a passion for horticulture.
Working Conditions:
This is a full-time, permanent position working 41 hours per week, including paid breaks, Monday to Friday. The successful candidate will be based in Central London.
