Job Title: Senior Occupational Therapist

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Occupational Therapist to join our Community Rehabilitation and Falls Service team at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful candidate will have significant rehabilitation experience at specialist level across relevant clinical areas, including elderly care, intermediate care, dementia, orthopaedics, and falls. They will also have experience of managing less senior staff and students, including providing supervision and appraisal.

The post offers opportunities to develop leadership skills, enabling the successful candidate to take a key role in a number of exciting service developments. The Community Rehabilitation and Falls Service has close links with occupational therapy colleagues in other community services and the hospitals.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing highly specialised and advanced assessments and treatments as part of the Community Rehab and Falls Service, providing home-based, outpatient, and intermediate ward-based therapy to adults living in Southwark and Lambeth.

Main Duties:
  • To perform highly specialised and advanced assessments and treatments as part of the Community Rehab and Falls Service.
  • To act as team leader, manage designated staff performance, and be responsible for the day-to-day coordination of the Occupational Therapy service as part of the Community Rehabilitation and Falls Service.
  • To work autonomously, frequently as a lone practitioner, and at times in conjunction with team colleagues, across a variety of locations within the community, including clients' homes and residential care settings.
  • To work across borough boundaries, accessing and recording information, communicating with patients and colleagues, attending meetings or training using mobile devices, and coming into offices when required.
Person Specification:
  • Health and Care Professions Council registration as an OT.
  • BSc or MSc in Occupational Therapy.
Experience:
  • Significant rehabilitation experience at specialist level across relevant clinical areas.
  • Experience of managing less senior staff and students, including providing supervision and appraisal.
  • Experience working in falls prevention and management.
  • Working in a community setting.
  • Experience of research.
Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of the rehabilitation of older people, including the frail elderly.
  • Specialist knowledge base relevant to service area gained through work experience and formal post-graduate training at or equivalent to Master's level.
  • Highly specialist knowledge of a range of assessment and treatments relevant to the client group.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how the ageing process impacts on health.
  • Knowledge and experience of quality improvement methodology.
  • Understanding of how clinical Governance relates to Occupational Therapy practice.
Abilities:
  • Ability to carry out risk assessments, including those for moving and handling, in a variety of settings.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate treatment programmes effectively in physical, cognitive, and perceptual rehabilitation.
  • Able to assess complex posture and seating needs and provide appropriate recommendations.
  • To assess equipment provision and minor home modifications to facilitate complex discharge.
  • Proficient IT skills, e.g. word processing, email, PowerPoint, excel.
  • Ability to manage a complex and constantly changing workload of clinical and non-clinical duties, demonstrating excellent time management, prioritisation, and organisational skills.
  • Highly developed verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to demonstrate skills sharing and collaborative working at a variety of levels.
  • The ability to devise, deliver, and evaluate training both within the service and to other agencies.
  • Able to work as part of a multi-professional team, understanding the roles of others, both within and external to the Trust.
  • Ability to adopt innovative and flexible working practices in order to integrate interventions into the client's home environment.
