About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Nurse Specialist to join our team on New Forrest Ward, specializing in Diabetes and Endocrinology (D&E) mixed with acute general medicine.

As a Nurse Specialist on our ward, you will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with a great support network, striving to deliver exceptional patient care and outcomes. You will be part of a team that values learning and development, with opportunities to build and improve new ways of working, and to progress to specialist nursing in this area.

Key Responsibilities
  • To ensure high standards of patient care are delivered in accordance with agreed standards, policies, and procedures of the Trust.
  • To participate in teaching and facilitating a learning environment to ensure all staff on the ward have the necessary skills, knowledge, and support.
  • To be proactive with patient transfers and discharges, ensuring they are safe and discharge is at the earliest opportunity.
  • To ensure junior staff are aware of agreed standards of practice.
  • To assist in evaluating new nursing procedures, research, and initiatives, and where appropriate, incorporate them into clinical practice.
  • To participate in the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) and ensure necessary admission and discharge documentation is completed in a timely manner.
  • To store and administer prescribed medications safely in line with legal and Trust requirements.
  • To assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient problems, producing a written plan of care as required.
  • To report, document, and evaluate accidents and unit incidents via the Trust's reporting system.
  • To participate in the development of clinical supervision within the ward.
  • To participate in educating staff and to be an NMC Supervisor and Assessor for student nurses.
  • To autonomously request and carry out clinical investigations to aid and confirm diagnosis.
  • To develop and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Registered nurse with UK NMC registration.
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Desirable Qualifications

  • One year post-qualification experience.

Experience

  • Acute care setting experience.
  • Awareness and ability to use the Trust's computer systems.

Skills

  • Venepuncture and cannulation skills.
  • Ability to administer IV medications.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with managing DKA patients.

Knowledge

  • Preceptorship completed or started.

Desirable Knowledge

  • Supervisor training.
