We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Benefits Caseworker to join our team at Citizens Advice West Northants and Cherwell. As a key member of our Macmillan Welfare Benefits project, you will play a vital role in providing expert advice and support to individuals affected by cancer.
Key Responsibilities- Provide comprehensive welfare benefits casework services to individuals affected by cancer, including disability benefits and other sources of financial support.
- Liaise and negotiate with statutory and voluntary organizations to progress clients' cases and ensure they receive all available assistance.
- Maintain detailed case records to ensure continuity of case work and information retrieval.
- Refer clients to colleagues or other agencies as appropriate for specialist help with issues outside the service's remit.
- Provide advice and information on welfare benefits and other sources of financial help to health and social care professionals working with the client group.
- Deliver cancer-specific benefits awareness training to colleagues and other health and social care professionals.
- Support social policy work by providing case studies and feedback on issues of concern to people affected by cancer.
- Stay up-to-date with legislation, policies, and procedures and undertake relevant training.
- Read relevant publications and attend internal and external meetings as agreed with the line manager.
- Prepare for and attend supervision sessions and contribute to team meetings and management team meetings as appropriate.
- Assist with service initiatives to improve services.
- At least two years' experience of advice work in a similar role.
- Demonstrable in-depth knowledge of welfare benefits including those related to disability and sickness.
- Proven ability to work sensitively with a diverse range of clients.
- Good professional boundaries and emotional resilience when faced with complex and potentially life-threatening situations.
- An ordered approach to casework and ability to follow set procedures concerning casework and file management.
- Ability to use IT in the provision of advice and preparation of reports and submissions.
- Good oral communication skills with particular emphasis on negotiation and representation skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing with particular emphasis on negotiation and representation skills.
- Numeracy skills required to understand statistics and check calculations.
