Job Purpose:
The Communications Programme Manager will lead the Communications Team in delivering an ambitious strategy to engage and inspire alumni and friends of the University, supporting the University's strategic priorities.
Main Responsibilities:
- Develop and deliver a comprehensive communications programme to engage and inspire alumni and friends of the University, supporting the University's strategic priorities.
- Manage the Birmingham In Action campaign branding, ensuring it meets wider University branding guidelines and identifying opportunities to maintain visibility of the campaign.
- Ensure excellent delivery across print and digital channels, including social media, email, and website, ensuring all content is within brand guidelines.
- Set objectives for the communications programme, evaluate impact, and implement change when required.
- Manage the performance and development of the DARO Communications team, bringing leadership, creativity, energy, challenge, ideas, and expertise.
- Hold people to account, celebrate exceptional performance, and act on underperformance.
- Provide communications expertise, advice, and support across the wider DARO team.
- Work closely with the Events Programme Manager and Donor Experience Manager to lead on Programme Planning for the office.
- Work in partnership with DARO colleagues to identify opportunities and efficiencies and create high-quality and innovative communications that put supporters and key audiences front and centre.
- Manage significant planned projects, including the Old Joe alumni magazine (print and digital), as well as one-off key or high-profile projects.
- Manage the DARO communications budget, working closely with the University's Creative Media team, external suppliers, and freelance providers to maximise value for money.
- Proactively build relationships with college teams and University departments, working with them to identify opportunities to innovate and collaborate, to ensure all DARO communications are aligned to the key messages and communications of the University, and to ensure audiences receive the appropriate frequency and quality of contact.
- Act as lead contact for key individuals across the University and externally to share messages and maximise opportunities, to include prominent alumni, academics, and colleagues in the External Relations, Creative Media, Careers Network, and Student Recruitment teams.
- Promote equality and value diversity, acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.
Requirements:
- Qualified to Degree level or equivalent practical experience, ideally with qualification/s in journalism, PR, or marketing.
- Demonstrable strong track record of working in a communications management role, preferably in the higher education sector.
- Evidence of literacy and numeracy, with the ability to write clearly, and to produce and analyse information and data.
- Understanding of and ability to represent, orally and in writing, plans and information in a concise manner.
- Ability to write and edit strong, compelling copy, and give feedback and advice on effective communication.
- Good understanding of the impact of high-quality communications on participation in fundraising and volunteering activity, with the ability to measure impact and set targets.
- The ability to understand and communicate complex expressions of academic vision to non-academic audiences and supporters.
- Excellent people-management skills and experience.
- Excellent budgetary management skills and experience.
- Experience of supporting or developing communications programmes.
- Highly proficient IT skills, including the MS Office and website editing software.
- Competent user of social media, video filming and editing packages, and Photoshop picture editing software.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, relationship building, and influencing skills with the ability to deal confidently with a range of internal and external stakeholders/contacts at all levels.
- The ability to work under own initiative to prioritise workloads and meet deadlines, managing a complex workload with projects running simultaneously.
- Knowledge, passion, and interest in communications and media, both digital and print, and a strong news-sense.
- The flexibility to work unsociable hours (evenings and weekends) when required and to travel in the UK and potentially overseas.
- Understanding and acting in accordance with fundraising and data regulation and protection, including the Fundraising Regulator Code of Conduct in relations to a wide range of communications.
